Ghost Rider wasn't going all out from the begining, sure, but Deacon (I'm guessing that was the big guy's name) was using holy swords, just about the only thing that Ghost Rider can't heal from immediately. It's like giving a big guy kryptonite. He's got a chance to beat Superman that he sure as hell doesn't deserve.
In the end, Ghost Rider still won though. As soon as he started dishing out a little damage on his own, the big guy went down awfully quick.

As an aside, Ghost Rider = Angel is the stupidest revelation to ever hit Ghost Rider. I'm personally hoping that Caretaker or someone reveals that it was just a bunch of bull Satan spewed to piss JB off. That's how they retconned Jesus out of the old 70s Ghost Rider comics.

depends on who the spectre is tied to. GR's penance stair won't effect the spectre personally because he kills for the same reason as GR. but if spectre had to be tied to someone who did a whole lot of bad things well, as we see in the blackest night it will effect him to.
unless spectre does a huge thing before GR can try it
