Comics are JUST as messy, even more so. Think about it, you've got characters written by multiple writers, each with different interpretations of what that characters' abilities are, so you've got characters being godly powerful in one story and then weak in the next. You've got characters with completely different personalities from story to story depending on the writer. You've got characters with multiple storylines running at the same time (Batman has something like 5 solo books each with its own story and that's not even counting his appearances in team books) that inevitably contradict each other. You've got events from one book affecting another or derailing story lines entirely even if it wasn't in the writer's original plan, so he has to work it in, even if that means the readers get confused.
Comics are THE messiest medium in terms of continuity, plot, character development and consistency.
