Ok, I know that this has been attempted on here before, but it always seems to get off track from what I believe is the actual intent. The question, who is the strongest superhero. Who is the strongest villan. What seems to happen though is the first answer is TOAA, then The Living Tribunal, etc. In my book, they are not superheroes, they are cosmic entities and shouldnt be included in the discussion. Even Zeus and Odin are not really superheroes. Neither of them would end up being an Avenger or the Justice League.

So, with all that in mind, here is the question. Who is the strongest? Magneto for example wouldnt count as his power is strictly tied to magnetism, (he cant use it "directly" to lift the tree in my back yard for example) but Green Lantern would count as his ring can be used to amp his strength. In addition, no character at skyfather level or above would be considered acceptable. Captain Marvel or Black Adam are fine even though their powers are derived from magic whereas the Spectre, Zeus or Odin should not be considered in this debate. Make a list of the top 10 heroes and top 10 villans and lets see if we can finally put this one to rest! I leave it to the great minds on Comicvine to settle this question once and for all!

(Well at least until the next amnesiatic character comes to his/her senses and remembers he/she can lift North America!)

What Jay said. I am a Marvel guy, but I find it hard to believe Hulk is at the top of the hero list. And even though I am a Marvel guy, I also try to keep an open mind and am kind of resigned to the fact that somebody whose name starts with "S" will be at the top of that list. Nope.. I dont mean Spiderman. Even so, I think Trion Juggs or Superman Prime are good choices to be near the top of the villan list. But keep in mind, speed doesnt matter here. So, just because Prime might be able to speed blitz Hulk, that wont win the day in this OP.

When has Hulk shown infinite strength? Also, Superman actually does have infinite strength and has actually shown to grown stronger and stronger with time.

No, Hulk does not have "infinite strength", he has "potentially infinite strength". A fine, but distinct, difference.

While Hulk has no upper limit, his strength at any given time is finite. And Hulk is far from the only character with "potentially infinite strength".

Purely out of interest, do you have any scans that prove Superman's infinite strength?

@SirMethos: True, I should have stated that.

I don't have any right now, but you can find some easily. The more time Superman spends under a yellow sun, the stronger he gets, hence why when he was younger, his powers were not as they are in his adult time; also, the sundip can be evidence of this. Another bit of evidence is the gold superman that spent centuries in the sun.

@guttridgeb: To go back to your original comment. How would Hulk be number 1 on the list, when there are several other characters that have "potentially unlimited strength", just like Hulk. Unless it's a shared number one of course. But there would be dozens of characters sharing that first place, which kinda makes the title a bit moot.

@Jayfournines:

It was stated once in a comic fourty years ago that the Hulk's strength has no limits, and every since he has been considered to have "infinite" strength. However, he lacks any real strength feats to put him as the "strongest".

Probably more to this list, but here's my top 10 of both.

Top 10 Strongest Heroes, and this list will not name the same person twice, so assume strongest versions of them. And no particular order either.

  • Superman
  • Mr. Majestic
  • Thor
  • Beta Ray Bill
  • Supreme
  • Hercules
  • Hulk
  • Sentry
  • Martian Manhunter
  • Captain Marvel

Top 10 Strongest Villains, and this list will not name the same person twice, so assume strongest versions of them. And no particular order either.

  • Thanos
  • Darkseid
  • Juggernaut
  • Galactus
  • Despero
  • Orion
  • Superboy
  • General Eiling
  • Ragnarok
  • Celestials (No particular order, and yes, I consider them bad guys)

Thanks for reading,

@guttridgeb: All the other kryptonians that have the same basic power-set, the daxamites(that have the same powers as kryptonians), silver surfer can increase his strength with no real limit, IIRC Thanos can increase his strength through cosmic power as well, with no stated limits, Meggan via shapeshifting gets, IIRC, the physical powers of the person who's shape she uses(that includes strength), Captain Atom(pre-flashpoint) can likewise increase his strength with no stated upper limits(which also adds major force and bombshell, who have the same general power sets).

I could keep going for a while, but I believe you're starting to get the picture.

If we're talking about currently in comics, then Superman is probably the number one, with Potentially Infinite Strength(just like Hulk) but a higher 'base' level(though Hulk's strength increases faster unless superman sundips).

If we're talking about in general(i.e. all time) in comics, then Silver Age Superman probably takes the prize as number 1.

I agree with most of Jays hero list although I would put Hercules above Thor. They have matched strength on several occassions. There have been some stalemates between them but I have never seen Thor come out on top in the purely strength department whereas I have seen Hercules on a few occassions shown to be superior to Thor. I personally think in pure strength, Hercules is on top in Marvel but I would give a "slight" edge to Thor on the battlefield due to Mjolnir's added power vs the mace of Hercules. As for the villan list, remember we are talking about no one at skyfather or above level so Galactus, Celestials etc should not be considered. Not sure about Thanos at the top spot either. In overall power he's tough to beat but in pure strength I cant see him at the top. And I would add Doomsday and Black Adam to this list as well.

@Jayfournines:

I was gonna put Black Adam in there actually. But I think most people on this list might beat him out in strength, even if just by a little. I dunno, was a tough list to make to be honest, there are a lot of others to consider for both categories.

  • Daxamites
  • Black Adam
  • Wonderman
  • Starheart Alan Scott
  • ION Kyle
  • The Fallen One
  • Silver Surfer
  • Morg the Executioner
  • Jax-Ur
  • General Zod
  • Kid Supreme
  • Amazo
  • Solomon Grundy
  • Genis-Vell
  • Hank Henshaw
  • Mongul
  • ...and so many others

The One Above All is the strongest character in the Marvel universe simply because he is the god of the Marvel Universe. He is, "beyond any known system of strength." Same is said for The Presence in the DC Universe. Besides that, i would say that Odin Force Thor, The Living Tribunal, and Superman Prime 1,000,000 are probably the strongest from the Hero Category. As for villains i would have to say, Galactus, Thanos and The Anti-Monitor.

Regardless of whether it's pure strength or not, Hulk would not be the number 1. For 2 reasons:

1. There are several other characters that, just like Hulk, have "potentially infinite strength".

and 2. Because more than one of those characters, have a higher base-line than Hulk. At any given time, Hulk's strength is finite, and several of the characters are, not counting the extreme cases, stronger than Hulk on average.

There are several characters who, in a purely physical fight, could take Hulk down if they did it fast, while Hulk would win a drawn out fight, even though they have finite, static, strength(i.e. a strength level that doesn't continuously increase), simply because their strength is far above what Hulk's average strength level is.

Good points SirMethos. I agree completely. Wolfrazer, yes, going on strength alone in this OP. ImmortalOne, as stated above, speedblitz has no bearing on this OP. Its about strength alone. Calebhara, um..... what Jayfournines said. Floopay has some good choices on his list. Anyone have other ideas?

PC Validus is right up there. I think for the sake of avoiding the Silver Age Superman arguement, as his abilities were really just ridiculous and NOT in a good way, I think we should consider the more current strength level of these characters. If not, there is no debate, the silver age SuperGuy that could just sneeze and destroy star systems would easily take it.

Actually I'm going to say the Flash. While his normal strength level isn't overly high; it increases exponentially with his speed. The IMP is a classic example of this, and I think it makes the Flash the strongest regular Superhero.

After that I'd say Superman after going for a sun dip in a blue star.
