I think it's been done, also not a battle.

Also, Pre-52 Supes holds back more.

New 52 Supes is weaker (strength, durability, etc.) so Surfer holds back more.

Although it really shouldn't matter, Superman in most cases.

Difficult to quantify, really. Both hold back a great deal.

True.

I wouldn't necessarily call him weaker. But we haven't seen him doing a lot of things yet. A bit soon IMO.

Surfer,

he has shown an ability to drain life energies,

the Surfer has a high level of telepathy where he could just mindwipe most enemies making them vegetables

or open up a blackhole destroying his enemy and their whole F*%**ing planet

he has eaten a star and can blast out enough energy to wipe out a whole solar system

The Silver Surfer holds back because that's his personality, he's a peacemaker that already killed billions and billions. When he chose to become herald he was mostly serving this role was to save his home and his girl. However after becoming a herald, and acting as herald he doomed many other alien lives. Galactus mindwiped his conscious making him feel less for the lifeforms and people he doomed, he finally turned against Galatcus saving Earth but the death and destruction was already unleashed across the Galaxies. Story of a fallen angel trying to find his lost humanity, he's a hero but he's got one hell of a messed up life story.

Superman does hold back a hell of a lot but not as much as Surfer IMO, Superman has no reason to feel shame, he has the perfect immigrant story. Found as a baby and brought up by perfect parents, he's not burdened by guilt, he didn't even meet his real mum and dad, he meets holograms and stuff but has no memories of them as a kid and Superman isn't burdened by the guilt of killing billions and billions. Superman got his powers by inheritance, krypton DNA and the Sun gave him free superpowers

The Silver Surfer's powers came by noble means but are also ridden with sin and sacrifice, Surfer gained powers by sacrificing himself as herald but in the end having this herald power would doom billions of others.

Also when you read Superman comics you can see sometimes he really unleashes his full power every few comics, like in his fights vs Wonder Woman vs Mongul vs Zod etc

The Silver Surfer does fight other top tiers like Beta Ray Bill, Ravenous, Thor, Tenebrae, Quasar....but even during these fights it reads as if Surfer is always holding something back.

Surfer, because he is walking PIS machine. Using half of his powers would end most of his battles in first second.

The Silver Surfer doesn't hold back, writers just pretend that he isn't powerful enough to solve most problems he's met with instantly.

The Silver Surfer.

Try to think of who could possibly stop a BLOODLUSTED Silver Surfer fully utilizing Cosmic Awareness? If you give Surfer ample prep, pretty much only the most powerfull magic users have any hope of a chance whatsoever.

@Hoboseid: I think much of what you said has merit, but I don't think you need guilt or shame in order to hold back a lot. Superman holds back because he's responsible. He doesn't need a lot of people to die in order to be shamed into holding back his power, he already understands what would happen if he unleashed. He knows better without having to experience what his power could do to everyone else.

Superman holds back more..He doesn't use his powers to full potential

Surfer is victim of PIS..He doesn't even use his powers..

#21 Posted by BarelyAverage (934 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago - Show Bio

Superman holds back but not more than Surfer. Superman holds back his strength mostly. I understand his heat vision and speed are also just as dangerous but he mostly holds back on his punches. Surfer can manipulate matter and energy with the power cosmic. This is greater than any physical force really.

#22 Posted by Jeronimo (588 posts) - 1 year, 5 months ago - Show Bio

@BarelyAverage: Well said.

Also, how many times does Surfer transmute a foe in battle? Rarely. Completely holding back...

The Silver Surfer rarely uses area of effect blasts that would kill or incapacitate almost any foe but doesn't becuase the blast would also completely destroy a city or ravage the countryside. Too much collateral damage.

The Silver Surfer could pretty much destroy the Earth at will. Or the Sun. THAT'S holding back.

Nor does he commonly use his planetary scale telepathy. That's holding back.

If the Silver Surfer went insane and turned evil in nature, he'd be a very real threat to star systems everywhere.

Instead Norrin is basically a pacifist and inquisitive in nature.

Oh yeh, didn't the Silver Surfer destroy the Quantum Bands that would have basically elevated him into the next tier in the Cosmic hierarchy. He was temped by the POWER but in the end destroyed the Bands by transmuting them in his hands?

That's holding back.

And let me add that in every battle of the Silver Surfer vs Thor the Silver Surfer always seems to be holding back. He's usually spending time just trying to talk some sense into Thor.

Yeh, he's stated that Mjolnir has a power more than his own but NOT Thor himself. So all Surfer has to do is seperate Mjilnor from Thor just momentarilly FTW. Or dodge a strike from Mjolnir and in the little time that it takes for it to return incapacitate Thor. So any loss after the first to Thor is HOLDING BACK and pure PIS.

that is not holding back

just because the writer doesn't use all ss powers doesn't mean he is holding back it means that the writer doesn't even know what ss powers are

just because odin's head butt on galactus didn't destroyed a galaxy doesn't mean he was holding back

I bed to disagree Surfer holds back more although it would be hard to quantify.

He doesn't use most of his powers, possibly because he cant bear to kill anyone.

I recall a fight against Rhino and against many civilizations and all.. He is like a godly character who tries his best not to kill or hurt anyone as long as its possible (sorta like superman but since he is more powerful he hold back more in my opinion).

I dont know alot about SS aside from what ive read on threads, but from what everyone says it seems that the only reason SS seems to be holding back is because the writers dont fully know what his powers are.

Superman always holds back, even if he seems to be going all out he still doesnt have that killing intent to him nor seem to be utilizing all the energy he has. I guess like you said, we cant really quantify, but IMO id say Superman holds back alot more

I understand but silver surfer seems to be holding back even when he's being written by Stan Lee. Therefore we can rule writers not knowing his powers off for most part. Another reason why he holds back is because of his character, he has to hold back he has no other options. If he uses all of his powers nothing short of a cosmic beings can beat him. he has transmutated an entire planet, aged and de-aged it, is a planet level telepath and can practically do anything. Very god like still he fights against characters like Hulk (once), Abomination (twice), Rhino (once), some random unknown aliens with very little super powers. that shows he holds back.

Given his power set everything silver surfer does in 99% of his comics is him like using 10% of his powers or even less. Thats holding back you know.

Silver Surfer by a long shot.

Without even comparing Supes and SS i think Superman holds back more since he is usually pitted against super criminals and planetary threats. Surfer on the other hand deals with universal villains and usually the stakes are to high for him to hold back. On any other occasion since the power cosmic gives Surfer the ability to manipulate matter thus being able to liquidify almost anyone in an instant i'd say he holds back a lot.
