Which is a better hunter: Cats or Snakes

Okay, so Cats and Snakes are some of the wild's not fear predatory hunters. And don't even say predatory birds, because you can compare a bird to a snake. These are land animals. Anyway, there will be two categories of size.

Small: Small cats, such as feral "housecats" and some Bobcats. Small Snakes, venomous or not, that share the same prey range as these cats, size-wise.

Large: Bigger cats. Not Lions or Cougars mind you, but ones known for their stealth, such as Tigers or Panthers. Bigger snakes, mostly constrictors, like Pythons.

This is not a fight, but a competition. Which is a better, not efficient and versatile hunter?

Cats use everything in their environment. Snakes simply slither through grass.

Hate snakes. I once used my weed wacker to kill one, cut it's head clean off.

This is in the wrong forum..and it depends on the species of both families.

Snakes can survive in a wider range of habitats then cats, but in envirements that cats and snakes coexists I would say the felines would be the more feared hunters simply because of their voraciousness.

A snake can survive off a meal for weeks, cats need to constantly eat. Furthermore, cats stalk their prey as proactive hunters. Snakes usually follow a sit and wait approach to finding food.

Basically, cats are better hunters because they actually hunt. Snakes, usually sit in place. However, if we compare both animals as a whole species in general I would say snakes are superior.

Between their heat sensitive organs, and lethal venom I would put snakes > cats.

Do snakes even hunt? I've always thought they lie in wait and strike whatever happens to cross their paths..but cats, everything they do seems to be like their stalking something. Even when they're playing with you, it's just practice for catching prey.

What if...... Spiders were involved. Not spiders that build webs mind you, but hunting spiders. No web builders or burrowers.

Snakes can survive better without food. Cats hunt like, once a day? A Snake can go for weeks, heck months, hell years.

In hunting, Cats are more of a "Chase and Catch" type, whereas Snakes are like Campers/Stalkers.

Who would win in a fight, Smaller Snakes can take down Smaller Cats, larger ones are debatable.

The OP should have enough time on this site to realize that this question doesn't belong in the battles forum. Heck, I'd prefer him to ask who'd win between Andre the Giant and a tag team of Hillbilly Jim and Rick Martel!

Small: The cat would probably get to them first.

Large: Many large snakes can kill any animal, large or small, in a single strike (namely the Rattlesnake, Gaboon Viper, Black Mamba, most species of Cobras, Tiger Snake, Bushmaster, Fer-de-Lance, and Inland Taipan.) And Reticulated pythons have been reported over 30 feet. Plus, the Anaconda can quite easily kill and eat an Caiman whole, which would pose a threat to most large cats if it lived in their enviroment.

It's really impossible to compare. Cats stalk prey and attack the neck, or toy with them for a while to wear them down.

Snakes on the other hand wait for prey to come to them and usually use venom to stun and kill prey, or constrict it, meaning they don't have to hit a vital area and often let them go after striking to avoid injury.

Cats are ninjas.

Leaning towards snakes but it's pretty even. Not all of them sit in one place. They can taste their prey with their tongues and because they're forked it leads them right to whatever they're hunting. They have all the senses of cats and more.

It was explicitly stated in the OP that there will be no actual fighting between the Cats and Snakes, merely a hunting competition.

I think Cats make better hunters. Don't they have more heightened senses than snakes for hunting?

Snakes are the best. They can easily outmatch cats. Snakes are stronger and faster in water. While cats spend their time chasing antelope, Snakes have already caught their food. Snakes are better then most animals at what they do.

You bumped a five year old thread to say that snakes are the best creatures to ever exist. can tell you love snakes cause of your username being snakeforce.

Also, cats are much better hunters. The Jaguar is top notch when it comes to hunting. Their techniques surpass basically any animal's hunting technique in the animal kingdom. The Tiger and the Leopard are up there as well. The only snake I know of that is a good hunter is the Anaconda

@gumflabica: well it also depends if there are wild once or domesticated ones. In other words it depends if all their life they have to hunt to feed themselve, or they are fead by a human being.
