A game of chess! Come on! You know you'd love to see the outcome in that one. Would they both be such strong players that they cannot defeat the other, and continually stalemate? I think it's obvious Riddler would be a grand master chess player, but then Joker has been shown playing chess more than once such as against Ra's Al Ghul (and beating him easily while casually talking about it and other things), and at least playing against Mr. Mxy-- however you say his name.
Just really curious to see other peoples' opinions and feelings on this one.

Joker is one of the few Batman villains that can actually challenge the dark knight for real. His plans are always what you least expect them to be and he's pulled one over on Batsy more than a few times. Add to the fact the he has beaten Ra's al Ghul at chess... he should take Riddler.

Nice to see you using the banner/signature now! *thumbs up*
Anyways, I think either :
A) The Riddler wins in a fair chess match which leaves Joker to be angry and spray acid onto Riddler's face.
B) Joker observes the game for 1 second, gets bored, and sprays acid onto Riddler's face.
Either way Joker wins because technically, those are the ultimate goals for every battle.

Joker's Insanity will be his downfall without it he would probably be one of the most intelligent beings in all comics...
I agree.
I never got why Joker is so dangerous though. His plans are always so low-level and minor tech. He never gets out of the "regular apparel and gag acidic weapons" type of person. He has medium-level plans too, and usually more hell-bent on mentally scarring one specific person. Without his insanity and thirst for making one specific person suffer *cough*Bruce Wayne*cough* he would be on par with Lex Luthor.

I would have to say that riddler could win barely looking and paying attention. I mean, he looks at everything constently as a puzzle, riddle, and fixes and or creates problems or solutions to things joker wouldnt even care to try to understand. Hed just make it disappear. lol but agree on all points that joker would immediately kill him after this mental mind game went down.
Riddler would usually stomp almost anyone. He's brilliant at anticipating peoples moves in general. More than once he's had Bruce (a pretty dang smart guy) running like a rat in a maze following Riddler's plans. Trouble with Joker is that he's never that predictable. He'll make brilliant choices, and totally self destructive choices one after the other. That's hard to plan for. Still, I think Riddler has got enough skill in general to force Joker into some choices, and thus he takes this.
Joker easy, his prep feats are vastly superior.@nickzambuto said:

@nickzambuto: When did the joker beat Ra's al Ghul at chess?
Here.
While this was impressive and Ra's himself did praise Jokers intelligence it should be noted that Ra's was mostly testing the Joker,he was simply curious and wanted to understand him.Notice his astonishment in the last panel,he was'nt paying that much attention to the game at all.
Also it did'nt end well for the Joker at the end of the story, both tried to double cross each other and it ended up with Ra's one upping the Joker so convincingly that it left no doubt as to who was superior.
Joker has comitted more crimes than Riddler has... I'll go with Joker here since hes proven to be more violent, evil and a heck of alot more dangerous than Riddler.

On topic, Riddler would try to distract Joker with sadistic riddles, while Joker laughs it up. Then Joker would get bored and shoot him, saying, "I'm more of a card clown.", and throw down a Joker card as he leaves.
Riddler will start the game as the stronger player. His brilliant mind will plan out every logical move that could possibly be played, mapping out moves and strategies in advance. However, midway through the game Joker makes a strategic misstep, causing Riddler to get overconfident and fumble. Joker then checkmates him in a single move.
