@chazz85: yes they are the same character. Kami and piccolo were two parts of the same whole, one can not live without the other. If piccolo and jr weren't the same character, kami would have died when goku blew a hole through the demon king in dragonball, and would have lived through piccolo sacrificing himself for Gohan in dbz. They make this very clear in the anime as well as the manga
