Surfer is a mixed bag he has shown powerful abilities but he has been taken down so easily Darkseid has had some low showings but most of them have been retconned by the time we reached final crisis and if losing to Superman was a low showing then Surfer shouldn't stand a chance.

Darkseid and Despero are 2 master manipulators so they may not even need to beat the mentally vulnerable Robert with actual powers.

There's not even a new 52 version of Despero and that's not the new DCU version of Darkseid.

There is a very good chance that 52 Darkseid is the same person as pre 52, it would fill in a few plot hole's.

@majestic99: If there's no current version, then you use the most recent version (Pre-New 52).

It totally makes sense. Why would we use a version that hasn't appeared? The most recent version is Pre-New 52, so we'd use that.
