Mushrooms actually help Mario. They alter his size depending on the type of Mushroom. I've never seen Mario get killed by a Mushroom unless I'm missing something.

In the Japanese version of Super Mario 2 there was a poison mushroom that would look very much similar to a regular mushroom but when you touch it you get killed instantly. He might have been referring to that
