What team is the most powerful group of super heroes to ever work together under one name. State the name and the roster please. All members included have to had worked together at the same time. Let's exclude the Legion of superheroes and any of the lantern corps or any other group that has vast numbers and rarely actually cooperates as a team. I'm talking super hero teams, not armies and not police forces.

To allow for more discussion let's attempt to collect a top 5

The Heralds are not really a "heroic" team, and while surely not the most powerful, they are worth a mentioning.

Morrison's JLA was tough, too. Superman (Blue), Martian Manhunter, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash (Wally West), Green Lantern (Kyle), Aquaman, Plastic Man, Zauriel, Orion, Big Barda, Steel, Aztek, Green Arrow (Connor), Oracle, Mr Miracle, Atom (honourary) from the top of my head.

I haven't read the JLA 1000000 crossover issues to know how good their future counterparts were, but they supposedly surpassed them, easily.

@Morpheus_: Ok, I fight it harder to distinguish marvel's good guys from their bad guys sometimes anyway. Just doing a few heroic deeds doesn't mean you're a hero though. Darkseid and Mongul both have done some good, but only because it benefited them. so they could commit more evil. Repentant villains I'd consider ok too.

Thanos may have had hidden agendas, but he also honestly repented, as well.

Fair is fair, when you say the name "Thanos" my initial thought isn't that of a hero. But, he has been at the very least, neutral, in the past, so I would say he qualifies.

Well how about the following three possibilities (although the first one is a reasl stretch - but they did try and take down Galactus)

1. Elders of the Universe (yeah I know, a real stretch)
2. Guardians of the Universe
3. Council of Godheads - All the skyfathers of the Earthly panethons

@the creator:  I don't think I'm qualified to judge, Guardians I've seen work together on a number of occasion, Didn't know who the Elders were, and the Godheads I think I've seen cooperate once when I was glancing though a comic. *shrugs*

I think all of these teams are ineligible, purely because the level of the beings included is (far) beyond the level of an average hero squad, no matter their purpose, or their alignment. They are not "super heroes" in the most common use of the word. Sure, Odin, or Zeus may be considered forces of good, but I don't think anyone thinks them as super heroes.

I think the JL taskforce is worth mentioning though not nearly one of the most powerful mentioned. Butty pretty impressive, especially for a small team.

Come on, little blue midgets who live at the former centre of the universe and empower a militaristic band of law enforcement officers - what's not heroic about that.

Specifically the "Magnificent Seven" roster. Also could be called "The yardstick by which all other superhero teams are judged".  Often immitated, never duplicated...

Superman
Batman
Martian Manhunter

That line up is not classic Guardians as it has Talon, Aleta and Hollywood mentioned.
The Blue Priest is Yondu.

Protecting life is what all superheroes do.  They just do so on a cosmic scale.  They even get Universal Majestic and if Mr Majestic isn't a superhero then who is?
