MODERN superman vs gladiator
Scenario: Superman comes to invade Shiar Empire with residents of new Krypton. Most of Imperial Guard and new Kryptonians wipe each other out leaving only Gladiator in between Superman and the Shi'ar throneworld. Battle takes place in the space outside of throneworld orbit.

@pooty: Batman has never really KO'd Superman in the main cannon universe. (At least not that I know of.) Batman has been able to distract and defeat a hypnotized Superman, but he has prep and he still didn't KO Superman, he simply got Superman to resist the hypnotism.
(I am refering to when they fought in Batman: Hush.)

IDK about the others, but IIRC the Gambit fight he was being controlled and doubting himself, and I've seen a Strontian getting killed with a shot in the head while doubting himself, I fail to see how that isn't comparable to Bats vs Supes.

what i meant is there's a crapload of green lanterns, supermen, in dc universe it's not a compelling read anymore.

well i can't disagree with your points in New Earth DC (its different in wildstorm). it gets a little ridiculous with the war or light and 'lightning lass, elemental lad' like who hell comes up with these names. And yes especially people like WW, SUperman, Batman (the worst), Alan Scott have pretty bad costumes.

lol, god forbid DC comics has heroes with amazing super powers. and Marvel has a ton of overpowered characters. Celestials. Shuma-Gorath. Dormammu. Phoenix. Galactus. Living Tribunal. both are guilty of having these super over powered entities. DC and Marvel both have a large number of cosmics and demons and even humans who could make the universe disappear if they willed it. MJJ, Molecule Man, Beyonder, and a number of gods and demons for Marvel and Lucifer, 5th dimension imps, Max Faraday, and Elaine Belloc, and several other demons and skyfathers for DC. There are several thousand green lanterns who protect and partol the universe. A lot of people find it compelling to read. It's like COPS but in space. And goofy costumes, you say? Have you seen Wolverine, Magneto, and Captain America recently? He has a huge A on his forehead. Who made that? Anyways, the costumes are supposed to be over the top. These are larger than life characters who are an iconic symbol to millions in their respective multiveres. They have to make a fashion statement.

Those characters are that strong because they were designed to drive the plot and test the major characters. everymoss is saying that it seems as if all the major DC characters (save batman) are stupidly over powered (i'm exagerating a bit here, i've just always wanted to say 'stupidly overpowered'" Martian manhunter, wonder woman, superman, captain marvel, green lantern, all these characters are so ridiculously powerful that they seem repetitive and boring.

is the worst costume ever, hands down. She is a rollerblading disco artist that creates light out of sound, or something. And she once took down dr. doom.

On a side note, I've never really seen the point of having teams of overly powered super heroes when really one of them could do everything. Why must the avengers assemble if Thor can do everything himself? Why does the JLA exist if superman, wonder woman, martian manhunter, captain marvel, and flash could handle almost any supervillain while on their coffee break?

@phliuy: I definitely see your point. Batman in the JLA is like a snail in a greyhound race lol. The key difference to me between Marvel and DC is in DC, the superheroes are insanely powerful and the villains are (usually) much weaker. In Marvel, it's the other way around. As long as DC keeps using plot devices such as kryptonite, fire, and the color yellow, then they can keep the stories interesting. Having emotional issues and incorruptable morals are probably the best plot devices used to make heroes look weak and more human. DC needs to make the Justice League a little more diverse. 3 out of the 7 core members have essentially the same base powers. I still think the stories are interesting when they include powerful foes that require the entire league to combat like Darkseid and Starro, but my favorite superhero stories involve characters like the Joker who test the morality of Batman and try to make him more of a villain than a hero. I mean, eventually Darkseid and Starro are going to give up on Earth lol. They need to switch things up a bit. And my vote for most ridiculous costume goes to Crazy Quilt lol, but he's technically a villain.

@andre54: totally agree with the morality tests, makes for great writing in all comics. On the other hand, i absolutely hate it when when supes is foiled by a little green rock.
