Mako and Bolin run the Earth and Fire Gauntlet

The Bending Brothers of Team Avatar face off against a series of earth and fire benders from A:TLA

This is Mako and Bolin after the end of Season 3.

No lightning for the first 6 rounds

Korra is missing, and Mako and Bolin think these people are responsible.

All battles take place at noon in the abandoned village where Azula, Zuko, and Aang fought

Round 1: Zhao

Round 2: Haru

Round 3: Zuko (before he learned lightning redirection)

Round 4: The Boulder

Round 5: The Rough Rhinos

Round 6: Long Feng and 2 Dai Li agents

For these rounds Mako can use lightning

Round 7: Zuko (post-dragons)

Round 8: Toph

Round 9: Combustion Man (brothers have 5 min prep and info on Combustion Man)

How far can they get?

Even though Bolin only has very limited lava-bending showings?

Toph would give them trouble but they aren't getting past Round 9

Clear the first 8 rounds with ease, it's 2 against 1 and in the case of Feng the Dai Lee where a joke

Combustion man will give them the most trouble they could be taken down but there pro-bending training is what gave them the edge against Pai-Li that the original team didn't have, smaller, faster more accurate attacks to disrupt his chi blasts instead of meeting his blasts head on.

You really think they can take Zuko and Toph that easily?

@arcus: True, but with both combustion benders, there were a lot more people battling them making it harder for the combustion benders to keep track of them, making the hit to the head more manageable.

Assuming they are fully rested between each fight the two as a team have the potential to clear, but might stop at Toph depending on various factors.

Mainly I'm wondering how Toph would react to lava bending. She has a hard time seeing in sand, and lava is liquefied rock. If Bolin figures out she can use seismic sense, an ability the brothers are quite aware of unlike literally everyone Toph has ever beaten, he might be able to neutralize her ability to see by surrounding her with lava.

I actually don't think Zuko will stop them. Mostly because it's a two on one. Bolin's earth barriers and Mako's fire shots compliment each other amazingly well. I just don't see Zuko bypassing Bolin's defense while avoiding Mako's offense at the same time. Mako even brings an added offensive advantage in that he can both generate and redirect lightning, where as Zuko cannot create his own lightning.

Stops at 7 IMO. Zuko could redirect Mako's lightning and bypass Bolin's Earth barriers. Even if they beat Zuko, they definitely don't beat Toph IMO, she's just too good for the brothers to beat.

Yes it's 2 against one, only nostlagia goggles would have anyone believe that Zuko or Toph could take down 2 main characters.

Comments like these make Zuko out to be some uber master he never was, Mako favours fire blasts and is like 2 feet taller, Bolin isn't going to hide behind a wall, both are agile characters, Zuko dodges/blocks one gets taken out by the other.

How is Zuko getting past lava? Also if he redirects Mako's lightning, Mako can redirect it back. They are also less rigid in their fighting style, and will be moving constantly.

@arcus they should get to 7 no problem. 7 and 8 would be VERY tough fights. and i can see them losing at 8, even with lightning and lava bending.

However, i believe that they CAN beat combustion man. With 5 minutes to come up with a plan, they should be able to get a clear shot at his forehead. They managed to take out the Female Combustion bender even when she had the other red lotus members with her

Just because they're 2 main characters doesn't necessarily mean they can beat any one person (not saying Zuko and Toph win, just making a comment)

Mako's definitely not 2 feet taller than Zuko

@arcus: But normal benders are little better than sandbags with smiley faces in the avatar verse, Kai was taking out Dai Lee. Stick with elite mooks, arrow guys, Equalists, metal benders.

True but neither Toph or Zuko where ever depicted as the type that could take other main characters with ease.

@arcus: If your not suppose to be a fighter type character then maybe not but main characters will often take multiple hits when fodder only take one, be better with little to no training than soldiers who have trained for years even when there not considered prodigies etc, tropes exist for a reason.

@dextersinister: True, being a main character does put you above being fodder, what I meant was that being a main character doesn't mean you're on the same level as other main characters (I thought that Zuko and Toph couldn't win because Mako and Bolin are 2 main characters)

@arcus: One other important thing, writers often try to balance out characters.

Zuko stalemates Katara and when Toph and Katara squared off they seemed evenly matched, that annoyed me, I was hoping Toph would stomp.

@dextersinister: Zuko was fighting evenly with Katara for the few seconds of fighting we saw, she still could have beaten him if Azula didn't come

Obviously any fight between Katara and Toph is going to depend a lot on the environment

Ohhh. Okay, I remember now.

Mako y Bolin aren't getting past 7/post-dragons Zuko. Although current Mako and Bolin will put up a fairly good fight with their team chemistry, lava-bending & lightning projection though Zuko's too agile and powerful for them, he'll scorch them individually, eventually.

@z___: I'd probably put the brothers agility pretty close to Zuko's, maybe about even with his. Pro-bending has given them a lot of practice

I think they can take it to round 8. Toph is fast and brutal, unlike most Earthbenders you see in the show. If they got past her, I think they could take Combustion Man especially with prep and info.

@arcus: True, but have you seen Zuko rescuing Aang? He fights off a bunch of soldiers by himself and takes a runs around them handily (even without Aang's help).

With pro-bending, maneuverability is restricted, you do dodge and you need agility, but you're in a much smaller area. This takes place in an abandoned village. Much more space to take cover and put your speed, agility and stealth to good use. This battle's is on Zuko's turf, he's used to the area too. He's also fought Aang -- a much faster bender than Mako and Bolin -- within the vicinity too.

@z___: The first time I started to think Zuko was cool was when he was the Blue Spirit, it was great

Zuko fought here once, and it didn't exactly go real well for him. I wouldn't say he has any kind of home turf advantage
