@drfate: if by "Powerful" you mean "Versatile" then yes. But overall powerful? No. Lizard is faster, more ferocious, much better healing factor, and has comparable strength. Groot is more versatile due to his branch and vine growing abilities but honestly, its not enough.
Groot easily pierced Drax's skin with one of his fingers so I don't see why he couldn't just impale Lizard with all of his fingers and the branches he grows.

I'm backing Groot here. Yes Drax did have the upper hand in the bar fight but Groot was hardly goin all out. He was always pretty chill to any of the other team mates. If he wanted too he could have impaled Drax and threw him around like a rag doll like he did to the group of Ronan's thugs. He can do similar to lizard with multiple vines and possibly ko him. But all in all this is a great match up.
Honestly possible stalemate. Lizard's healing factor was incredible, but Groot was very strong and lifted up a group of troops while impaling all of them. I could see each of them honestly winning an even number of matches. It's either stalemate or Lizard who could outlast Groot.

Don't see how Lizard can even put Groot down. Groot will eventually win when he decides to go all out and impales Lizard multiple times while throwing him around like a rag doll.
@fresh_prince: I think you are forgetting how good the lizard's healing factor was mate, he made a brand new tail right after Spider Man tore it off. He could regenerate limbs as well, he grew a new arm when he took the serum. He also has better speed and reaction times than Groot. I say possible stalemate because Groot can keep him at a distance with his tree limbs.
But, the Lizards claws were powerful mate, they tore through the metal lockers, ripped up spider man, and left claw marks in the solid floors and walls. Lizard was also very strong and could toss cars like they were sacks of potatoes.
Damn. Viners seem pretty divided on this one. Good match-up. I would love to see what a poll would have looked like. Hah.
Anyway I still gotta back Lizard in a very close fight. Groot's main limbs took an awful long time to grow back after being hacked off by Gamora. Lizard, being much faster and more vicious, shouldn't have much of a problem chopping him down. Groot's combat speed wasn't that impressive.
Lizard is very 1 dimentional... He'll have to brawl his way to a win.
Groot on the other hand has a plethora of ways to win, including but not limited to Finger's in the nose, 10 finger impale and throw-around, impale and then grow branches and leaves in his body, etc.
@lukehero: Yeah I remember his healing factor well and the problem is that I really don't know how he's going to fair with a couple of spikes going through his body and not just his limbs/tail. Groot is also more durable than the things you mentioned but I have no doubt the Lizard can still hurt him. The thing is, remember when he was letting Gamora cut him up? He seemed to have even more layers under his main one meaning that it would take a while for Lizard to get through him that's if Groot allowed it to happen. Groot also has very good regeneration feats and probably better overall since he can extend and parts of his body with no difficulty and very quickly.

@fresh_prince: Groots healing seemed a lot slower than the Lizard, he just has the edge on distance weapons with his tree limbs. It would be a very good fight though. Too bad these guys don't have enough feats to make a CAV. I
@lukehero: The healing itself seemed slow like when his arm got cut off but theoretically it should be quick since he was able to grow the rest of his body easily and very fast like when he picked up that thing in the prison cell and when he extended his limbs to take out Ronan's men. Yeah I totally agree it would be quite a fight!
