You were visiting King's Landing and got sentenced to death because someone overheard you say that King Joffrey is a coward. You demand trial by combat and Joffrey chooses The Mountain, Gregor Clegane, as his champion. You can pick as champion any person who appeared in the Game of Thrones book or TV show except for Oberyn Martell. You can't pick Oberyn!!

Rules:

  • The fight is to the death and takes place where The Mountain fought Oberyn Martell.
  • All characters are at their best as they appeared in the books or in the TV show, not the best during their whole life. For example Jaime has two hands, Khal Drogo before he got wounded, Sandor before getting bit, Barristan Selmy is at his current age, etc.
  • Gregor Clegane is in pre-Oberyn fight condition and wearing the same armor and wielding the same sword he had when he fought Oberyn.
  • Your champion can only use melee weapons. No bows, crossbows, or other long range weapons. No prep and no magic. Your champion can't use spells, wildfire, or any weapon other than melee weapons.
  • Your champion must be human (no giants, dragons, white walkers, magical creatures, etc.).

Choose a champion and fight!!!

We actually couldn't demand a trial by combat. Not very beggar who steals a loaf of bread can demand a trial by combat... just saying.

Jaime or full health Sandor without a doubt if I were in this scenario, then Bronn.

For the sake of debate, Greyworm with council from Barristan on how to fight a man in plate would be a good fight.

Pretty sure Jaime and Sandor are the only ones who can beat him straight up under these conditions, and possibly Barristan as well.

@wbr17: I know everything and I damn sure know that a knife fighter isn't going to do anything but get chopped in half or his head crushed against The Mountain.

@i_like_swords: Daario has shown me nothing in the books to suggest that he could even beat Jorah let alone the Mountain.

As for the ones listed above:

Tormund - No

Karl - Hell No

Brienne - could make a fight out of it but she was easily overpowers by the likes of Biter so No.

Daario - No

Jon - No

Drogo - No

Daario - No

Barristan - In his prime yes

Jaime - yes

Sandor Yes

Grey worm - eek, I'm just not sure. With the coaching of Barristan then he could make a fight of it but he would have absolutely no room for error. I don't think he could replicate Oberyn's feat because of his lack of experience against Westerosi Knights and more importantly his lack of poison.

Ok, I gotta throw my list into the ring here.

Sandor Clegane (obviously)

Jaime Lannister

Prime Selmy (probably easily too) Aged Selmy probably till takes the majority.

Syrio Florel

Jaqen Hagar

Grey Worm should be able to win the majority. He's got the skills.

The Blackfish Brynden Tully could possibly do this as well. That guy's kind of an ***kicker.

A lot of people say Bronn, and maybe, but I doubt for the majority.

The Smiling Knight should be able to pull it off, not sure if it counts.

Arthur Dayne definitely though i'm not sure if he should count.

Arya Stark (prime), Oberyn Martell (rematch, not acting stupid), the Hound (naturally should), and Jon Snow.

Def

Jaime Lannister - best swordsman, has the best chance to win

Sandor - A real beast but idk if he could beat his brother.

Jaqen Hagar - He's sneaky, a trained killer, I wouldn't doubt he could somehow succeed.

Ned Stark - great warrior, crossed swords with Jaime and held his own

Daario Naharis - Don't know much about him, supposedly a pit fighter since the age of 12, did so well that he was given his freedom...sounds like he won a lot....also i think...the pit fighting was to the death.

TV feats only? Drogo should wreck. Jaime and Sandor are also good choices. And maybe Brienne, just maybe.

@cregan_stark: Have you seen the first 4 episodes of the new season? Greyworm showcases more skill.

@i_like_swords: We never really get to see him in action in the books.

I edited the OP and removed the "TV feats only" restriction. Now book and TV feats apply. But again, characters are to be taken at their best during the time period of the book or show.

Maybe Ned. They beefed him up in the show because you know, Sean Bean had to be a badass and all.

Also Podrick Payne. He did kill a Kingsguard after all :p

I'm confused as to how people say Drogo would win. *Maybe* you can argue that he's as fast as Oberyn, but he doesn't have a weapon with the kind of reach Oberyn had. Doesn't have poison either.

With book feats I'll say.... Balon Swann?

In order Sandor, Selmy, Jaime. All of them could beat him, Selmy in his prime easily but aged I think Sandor is possibly the safer choice.

If I could pick anyone and from their prime, it'd be Oberyn, Selmy, Robert, Sandor, Jaime

@the_red_viper: Drogo doesn't have the weaponry or knowledge to beat the mountain. He either ends up getting chopped in half or getting his head crushed.

With book feats being added, my list grows:

Lyn Corbray

Brown

Garlan

Tumco Lho (a year from now)

Will all be added to the list. Maybe Darkstar but I'd like to see more of him as of right now he's all reputation.

And Jon Snow could win. That's if daggers aren't in the dark, of course.

@cregan_stark: yeah it would be a sight, especially when Robert is close in height to Clegane.

It's possible for Jon, he's a squirrelly little fella, and his sword is everything in this battle. I would say Bronn could take him but Gregors armor is head-toe.

@iragexcudder: Robert is close to Sandor but not Gregor. From my understanding Robert is roughy 6'6" while Sandor is closer to 6'8" - 6'9". Gregor on the other hand is closer to 8 feet tall.

Bronn should have a great chance to beat him due to his style and dirty tactics.

I'm the biggest Jon Snow fan, I just couldn't see it happening. I'm the first to say that Jon is going to be a great swordsman when it's all said and done but I'm not sure at this point, he's at a level to defeat the mountain.

@cregan_stark: you start at the bottom when destroying a mountain!

I think he'd chop his legs off, he's far faster and the sword has shown to defeat just about any metal. It COULD happen but you are right that it's quite the uphill battle.

@iragexcudder: Bronn is tougher than he gets credit for, over on the ASOIAF board I argued for Bronn many times.

Jon is my favorite character (Ned, Tyrion, Arya are others) and I would take him in a straight sword fight against someone like Loras.

@cregan_stark: Loras the sword swallower? Lmao but yes I'd agree Jon would take Loras with mid difficulty. Do you think Jon > Ms Brienne?

I'm excited for Jamie and Bronns journey to Dorne, though I'm sure one or the other will die if not Myrcella.

Bronn's not taking the majority. There's a reason he balked when Tyrion wanted him as his champion. Not even HE though his chances were that great. As for Snow.... yeah, in a straight up swordfight he doesn't stand the best of chances. Jon's probably the best of all the Starks when it comes to actual swordplay, but against the Mountain that Rides in Full Plate..... it's pretty doubtful he'd win the majority. Even taking 2 out of 10's kind of a long-shot. Jon's a great leader, and he's brave.... neither's really going to help him much here.

@schillenger420: Rob Stark made Jon look like horse poo in a duel. But for Bronn, I think he didn't want to fight because he just got the life he thought he would enjoy and Cersei has her hands deep in his pockets.

@iragexcudder: I'm not saying he technically couldn't, just that i'ts a long-shot and he def. doesn't take the majority.
