@never give up: Yes he can.
When I never seen it in the show...He still loses though. Wasn't Frieza bragging about once the planet was gone Goku would die. And why did Cell even try to destroy the earth(via self destruct). If saiyans could breath in space.
@never give up: Yes he can, if his father can. Plus Vegeta was going to destroy Earth with the Galick Gun. How was he going to breath after he would have destroy Earth? It would have been suicide. Him and Nappa was destroying planets well before they even made it to Earth. Plus Frieza lied about them not being able to breath in space. Plus Goku Instant Transmission is a prime example, on how he was able to travel to New Namek and the Kaioshin planet.

How does this help him win???
@never give up: I was not saying it would help him win. I'm just saying he can breath in space. Goku loses horribly here, and is better off getting backup. The Instant Transmission would only help him escape for a while and that about it. This is a stomp in Imperiex favor. I'm quite sure you know what Instant Transmission can do.I brought that up because he is traveling between time and space. That why I said it is a prime example, as a reference to him breathing in space. Not for him to win.
@SMXLR8: Yes he can. And I prove it, it in the upcoming movie in 2013 of the third month on the thirty. Before you say anything else the movie is canon. It takes place after the Buu Saga, and this clip with proof you can see Ulimate Gohan turn Super Sayian in the very same form. Akira Toriyama is the one who did the whole movie and said it was canon to the story of the manga.
So it is not me who needs to move on, it is you who needs to move on.
@SMXLR8: Can you say No plot device, and no it is not a check mate. Bardock could breath in space, Vegeta could breath in space, and he did it while him and Nappa destroy a planet outside of there spaceship. This is canon because it was in the manga and in the anime. Before you can say what Frieza said, he was only bluffing about Goku not being able to breath in space. Vegeta was willing to blow up Earth, knowing full well that he would've survived (most likely because he can breathe in space. Not sure his spaceship would've helped much while it was being blown up). One more thing, you must had forgotten when Goku fly Boss Rabbit to the moon...And this is when he was kid, he had to breath in space in order to do it. Goku wasn't even that fast to do something like that at the time...And he use his power pole to do it. There is your check mate.
And it isn't a plot device, It justAkira Toriyama writing. He forgets what he has wrote previously, which is why the story is not consistent and fail to be a coherent. Goku did a lot of things when he was a kid that he didn't do when he was a adult. It do to the fact that Goku doesn't remember any of it.

Goku can't breathe in space according to toriyama's original cannon work ..... Bardock =/= Goku ......
Goku dies in space before he gets one shotted by an imperiex probe.... Imperiex Prime doesn't even have to fart to annihilate Goku

Him fighting in space, for like 4 seconds from a trailer literally means absolutely nothing until we know the context.
