If Galactus can act against them while they're doing their prep, then it's not prep. That makes no sense. Galactus can just kill them as soon as the prep time begins.

But if his cosmic awareness allows him to find out about the team prepping to attack him, he can attack them first during the prep time... right? If so, then he's attacking before the battle even begins... which makes no sense.

It makes more sense if you allow Galactus to become aware of what they're doing, but cant act until the battle begins.
