As far as I know, Dean, because from what I've seen of the series, he almost always does massive research before even attempting to fight monsters.
Buffy is a little girl playing around.
Dean fights real threats.

Dean
Dean given he has backup, could be a computer geek or someone to search up whatever he wants to know. He researches and has been shown to take care of more dangerous threats than Buffy.
Buffy hasn't has so many feats, but she does have better H2H and martial art type weapon skills than Dean who is more like Rambo with just guns and combat knives.
Dean's entire life revolves around using his knowledge and skills to track monsters and kill them. Buffy relies on her team to track down the monsters and then she relies on her own H2H abilities. I think it's clear that Dean is the better hunter.
If I had to pick one of the two, Buffy. Dean relies more on on Sam and Castiel and Bobby and while I love Supernatural, Dean's most prominent combat technique is to let whatever creature he is fighting dominate him and then Sam stabs them from behind. Supernatural is a PIS fest.
supernatural has much more powerful characters than buffy the vampire slayer and dean has managed to deal with them all the time(as did buffy) but dean's verse is more powerful that's why i give him the win. as if one on one i give it to buffy
Dean has lost to demons in direct combat and been saved numerous times by other characters (Sam, Bobby, Castiel, even other demons) as well, and their durability is not relevant since his weaponry bypasses it. He was amped himself when he beat that vampire nest, and regardless Buffy can and has done the same thing, and vampires in the Buffy-verse of more impressive. He also never beat the alpha vamp. He's also been beaten in H2H by Sam.
Considering Buffy managed to wipe out an entire dimension of super-vampires in about ten minutes I would have to say she's a lot better at killing monsters.
She beat a god to death (almost) with a hammer.
She was able to raise an army, finance it, train it and lead it.
Over all Buffy has done a lot more.
But its not really a fair contest, considering she is the chosen one, and death is her gift and all.
You lot are trying to say that Buffy wins because she's the better fighter but that's not what this 'battle' is about.
@HowTerribleIsThat Well, hunting monsters involves the ability to kill them, so fighting does play a pivotal role. As to the research and all that, that is primarily Sam and Bobby, not Dean. For Buffy, it was primarily Willow and Giles and the other Scoobies.

I didn't say we should disregard their fighting abilities, I said it wasn't what this contest is about. We have seen that even without Sam, Bobby or Castiel Dean is an excellent tracker, the fact that he normally works with those people to do it isn't really relevant. For example, do you remember how quickly he tracked down Sam? Compare that to when Dawn went missing and Buffy had to have everyone just look everywhere. And Dean compensates for his lackluster H2H skills by always making sure he actually has a way to kill the monster he's about to fight, so the fact that Buffy would kick him about in a fight isn't as big a disadvantage as you might think.
I just stumbled on here doing some research on the new season 8 of Supernatural coming in october. which led me somehow to reading up on buffyverse "vs" fights which always have the same popular concensus, which I find wrong, and then i stumble on this topic.
Back on topic, this is a hard thing to judge. but. My vote goes to buffy ultimately.
Without question in a fight Buffy > Dean. No arguing it. and yes I know thats not the reason why she is a better hunter, but it does factor into it.
next, both Dean and Buffy have always had help from others. But buffy has had help from mortals and some vampires, witches, ex demons etc. Dean on the other hand has had help from his father and has been tracking monsters since he was what, 12? ALWAYS had either daddy, sam, bobby, cas or another equally knowledgeable demon there to help in some kind of way. Dean had aid from a side buffy did not. The all knowing Angels. Buffy had lost contact with the council early on and did not have as much time to learn as Dean had.
second, Buffy, being a slayer has natural instincts where she can sense the forces of darkness. Dean has good insticts but nothing supernatural that enhances them.
Back to my first point, There were many times Buffy's friends either abandoned her, or the danger was too great for her to let them help her. She had to track and face many dangers on her own.
As for her not being able to track dawn when she ran away in season 5, first off buffy and dawn were not close like sam and dean at that time. Additionally, Buffy didnt have an endless supply of money through fake credit cards or cell phones or technology that dean had access to.
And one last comment, just what big bad thing did dean track and kill that comes close to an invulnerable chaotic hellgod for example? the leviathans were a dissapointment, and far from invulnerable.
The ONLY being we have seen that trumps anything Buffy faced is Death. if youre not including the first evil which cant be killed, cannot die realistically. Even Death being able to reap beings such as Glory, not ben hes his own entity, or dark willow who could probably bind him with a thought is uncertain.
So adding together Buffy's supernatural ablities, accomplishments, and lack of resources Dean had, I have to say Buffy.
I love Supernatural but it really tests the limits of my suspension of disbelief on how incompetent the bad guys are, Buffy hands down. We may have had bumbling bad guy moments in Buffy but they took them to new levels in Supe . Crowley has been an incredibly level headed bad guy and I am not looking forward to seeing how badly his death will be handled.
