Actually based on evidence and pure debating skill on ILS's part I am now leaning more towards a stalemate between the two.
Ha, that's pretty epic. My Maul fanboying pays off!

@i_like_swords: No pure debating skill. ;)
Darth Maul wins pretty easy, but lets see what the current Luke bandwagon fans say these days :)
@i_like_swords and @erkan12 what do you guys think these days?
Darth Maul- 6-7/10. He is a VERY tiny bit more skilled then Luke as a duelist, and his saberstaff, something unfamiliar to Luke, would give him an unpredictability edge. TKwise, they're pretty much equals. Maul maybe better, with Chokes and Pushes and much more training but his techniques were much worse then his TCW. Physically, Maul. Maul has KICKED THROUGH TORSOS, ran at amazing speeds, and killed five tuskens in the blink of an eye. That's much better then anything Luke's accomplished. He also nearly killed Obi-Wan with a well placed kick to the face, sending him on a very big drop. Also, he's landed hits on Qui-Gon. Luke has only kicked Vader, and Vader didn't fall, he only flipped backwards and lost his footing for a millisecond. I'm using TPM Maul since this thread is eight years old.
Maul spanks
Spanking someone who fought ROTJ Vader to a standstill who is more powerful than Maul? Nah.
um thinking Maul, but it's close. Luke beat Vader for three reasons
1. Vader was conflicted
2. Luke was faster
3. Luke got a rage amp
With Maul there is no confliction, Luke doesn't have a speed andvantage, if anything Maul has the speed advantage, and Luke won't have a rage amp.
If Luke was in his amped state he would win.
I'll add a few points to consider to this debate!
Firstly Luke Skywalker's force potential well exceeded Yoda's. In the old canon (which sadly is no longer canon, but I'll reference it still) Luke Skywalker cut off the hands of Darth Sidious after a duel in which they were fighting so fast Leia saw only a blur, and this duel ended really fast. Darth Sidious was shown in TCW more or less toying with Darth Maul and his brother simultaneously, so this alone points to Luke being vastly superior, although this happens many years after ROTJ. Lets also not forget that it is canon that Darth Maul's strength is in his aggressiveness with the Force and his blade and his strategy... not raw Force potential, in which he is fairly weak.
Secondly, in his first duel with Darth Vader, Luke had very little saber-on-saber training. If you watch the duel very closely, and read the novelization, Luke is so proficient as a duelist that he started out very rough around the edges and getting pushed around and disarmed by Vader... learned on the fly from watching Vader, and as the duel progressed became skilled enough to land a kick on Vader and by the end of duel was skilled enough to actually land a hit on Vader just before losing his hand. This is a testament to Luke's ability to adapt, on the fly, to an opponent, study their fighting style, and counteract it!
Thirdly, we cannot underestimate the impact differences in Force mastery and potential have on a duel. We all know that Count Dooku was a highly skilled Makashi duelist. Makashi was a fencing-style saber form that was incredibly effective against other lightsaber forms. I'd even argue that Dooku's style and tactic exceeded Yoda's. Yet, in AOTC, Yoda overwhelmed Dooku with relative ease through his mastery of the Force, which he used to augment his saber style, speed, precision, and prediction.
Lastly, I don't know who said on here that being a better telekinetic wouldn't give you a martial arts advantage, but seriously? I throw a punch at you, you deflect it with a wall of air and then launch me back 10 meters where I slam into a wall. Luke's telekinetic superiority would make it incredibly difficult for Maul to even get close enough to use his martial arts, especially if Luke is smart enough give ground and then use the Force against him when Maul tries to get in close. Tactical retreat, ftw!
All things considered, I believe Luke to be the superior combatant here. He is just more skilled a swordsman, and has the ability to adapt to styles and weapons, whereas Maul is more of a brute force kind of fighter. Maul has the upper hand in physical combat, but if Luke knows how to give ground and avoid him, that doesn't matter much. Luke is so far superior as a Force adept that he could subdue Maul about as easily as Yoda did Ventress in TCW. Unless Maul gets lucky or takes Luke by surprise, I really don't see any scenario where he wins. I mean we're talking about the man who defeated Vader, Sidious, Exar Kunn, Lumiya, as well as Abeloth and 3 Sith simultaneously (Abeloth was a being roughly as powerful as the Son/Daughter from TCW).
@alextheboss: how so?
Maul by reasonable inference. Maul is a seasoned warrior with the harshest training imaginable, at his absolute physical peak at the age of 22 but with the experience and mental makeup of a veteran warrior, as ambitious as can be, and far more martially capable. Luke needs a lot more experience before he's ready to take on Maul.
And Vader was a washed-up, middle-aged, over the hill, crippled, and resigned old warrior. He doesn't compare to Maul.
@daywalker98: Vader is now confirmed to be better than ROTS Anakin, who was already better than Maul. Vader also has some of the best feats imo n the current Star Wars canon. If that is not enough, in Star Wars Rebels, Maul confirmed he could not defeat Vader alone, while Luke did.
Luke with his limited training designed to face Vader can't beat Maul, whose style is a nightmare for someone like Luke. Maul wins.

Luke trained for Vader not Maul.
Maul only lose if he is over confident and messes up.
