Chess has a technically limited mathematical amount of certain outcomes. It's why software from the nineties could beat or draw the best of chess minds. Any sufficiently super intelligent character from a comic world would literally be unbeatable at chess in practically the same way people can already do with checkers. So Thanos, Brainiac, Luthor, heck most of these guys could figure the game and all possible outcomes out in a couple minutes
I'd say the top ones would be Thanos, Batman, Lex Luthor and Doctor Doom. Simply because they have all the valuable skills as chess players (visualization, analysis, calculation, evaluation, pruning, planning, ability to adapt to changing situations, pattern recognition, prophylaxis and to have an eye for errors). The rest lack a few of these skills imo.

This. Guys like Braniac and Ultron are capable of making faster calculations for obvious reasons, but since the game has a finite number, pretty much everyone here will reach the same conclusion eventually. There can be no winner, it'll end in a bunch of ties.
I've always been partial to Lex as a chess player, although Brainiac and Ultron should be able to calculate literally every single possible move and be pretty much unbeatable.
Also, I have to put Tony high, as I actually have a chess feat for him.
i say L.
in deathnote he is at the same time the 3 best detectives in the world(under different alias), because if someone would try to find out his identity they would still contact one of his other alias...
he can also do like sherlock holmes... whenever he sees someone he can tell alot of aspects of his personal life etc... he's not just a genius, i think he would beat Lex Luthor.

Braniac analyses every move and then crushes
chess computers already exist, they can lose even if they can analyze every move...
chess is more about mind reading, it's easy to understand what is the best possible move and counter it, for example
that's why most people said lex luthor

Computers move tactically NOT strategically.
For example: A computer can not trick an opponent. A computer can not sacrifice pieces to prepare for a trap. Computers can not read a mind.... They only respond with Math.
this... I would put Bats, Lex, Ozy, Thanos, L and the good Doctor (who should win if he is allowed to talk hahahahaha)
