Pennywise is a God from his own realm/universe. he's virtually omnipotent and omniscient. The only way to defeat him is beveling you can (the kids only banished him because God was helping them). Pennywise could just turn the robot into a kid and eat it.

It weren't just sling shots, it weren't just middle aged adults. You sound like you watched the movie, so there's no reason why you could ignore elements that was in play in Pennywise's defeat in the movie: Imagination.
However, in the book, there was more that was explained, there was the Turtle, and forces that exist in Stephen King's universe that're familiar with the Turtle. These things were preparing the kids, for decade, so they can defeat IT.
