Karate Master just because he has more in his arsenal. Plus since it's Shotokan, he's worked on his body hardening. He has throws, kicks, and locks as well.

Shotokan is a very rigid style. I've never practiced it myself, but it is not as fluid and maneuverability based as something like Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai. I'd back boxer I think.

But the individual fighter matters more than style in use.

@bluejay4: With those weights Karate guy should take it. Walking around 145 means he probably fights as a super featherweight and while strong, aren't nearly as strong as heavyweights are.

I'll still take the Alis, Tysons, and Fraziers over any single discipline martial artist but in this scenario boxing loses.

@granitesoldier: I appreciate your opinion, but I don't think shotokan needs to be fluid as long as it gets the job done.

Only Karate styles that stand a chance against boxing are Seidokaikan, Kyokushin Shinken-Shobu, and others that drill punches to the head.

@sheenlantern: I thought there where no punches to the head in kyokushin, only kicks? As of right now, karate practitioner gets knocked out.

@buttersdaman000: those drunk a-holes were likely built a little bigger than the 12 year old girl sized boxer op gave us in this scenario.

True, maybe, but I don't see how that changes what i've seen...

And i've been to Martial Arts competitions as well. They never seem all that impressive to me during the combat portions.

@bluejay4: Combat has evolved and Shotokan is a style that has not kept up with he times. Boxers are too fast, too mobile, too fluid. Shotokan uses wide stances with slow strikes at maximum power.

There's a reason why top tier MMA fighters don't have Shotokan as a core, while other striking styles like Muay Thai are. I've practiced many styles and Shotokan is just not as good for self defense as many other styles. Boxing is not versatile, but is more combatively sound than Shotokan.

It's a fight, so anything can happen here, so choosing a side is virtually pointless, as this all based on how you see it plan out with to fighters without a record picture etc.

@granitesoldier: I agree 100% with your analysis for Shotokan, buy Boxing has its problems as well so I don't see why pointing out flaws in Shotokan is relevant. And mma is sport not real fighting so...

Karate is not practical in a fight. Its way too strict and rigid. The boxer will be dancing around the karateka throwing combos while he/she is still trying to get into a stance or preparing for a kick.

Well, I have one of them on Facebook and he does have belts....if you want a bit of context, they were defending their (girl) friends and got beat up.

@jayc1324: Karate has been used for centuries as a means of self defense and even used by monks to maim armored Mongolians. I think it's quite useful.

@bluejay4: Boxing does have its flaws. I've pointed them out several times in many other threads. I pointed some of them out here as well. However it has fewer in relation to fighting.

And I know MMA is a sport. I can give my resume on my MMA and real world experience but it will seem like bragging or likely dismissed as one of those 'things people on the internet claim' (we all k ow what I mean by that).

Suffice it to say I don't think either are perfect, or the best styles around for any number of things, but boxing does hold distinct advantages that exploit Shotokans flaws.

It's really impossible to say who would win, Karate is more versatile but like I've said on other threads look at Steve Fox from Tekken if your hypothetical boxer can dodge & counter like that then yeah he could match a 3rd Dan Black Belt.

@bluejay4: thanks.

I'll take the karate man due to kicks. While it far from guarantees his win, it'll help keep spacing from the punches.

I'll check to see.

Edit:

It doesn't say. He just has pics...but there are a few pics of Lyoto Machida so i'm guessing shotokan?

I'd go with the Karate man

However, I feel like people always grossly underestimate MMA and boxing when it comes to practicality on the streets.

Give me two people, one trained and one not, and I'll put my money on the guys who's conditions conditioned his body to take damage and to peak physical fitness over some guy who just "fights dirty" and counts on the fighter's MMA rules to save him

@strawhatluffy: I think boxing, wrestling, mma offer some practical stuff, but I don't recommend relying on just one either. Its best to train in as many disciplines as you can and use what works best for you.

People actually think Karate wins? Well. It depends on the style. Given Equal time to practice actually, the boxer will win. Boxing has the most powerful punches of any martial art and is a solid foundation for hands.

Not only this, but Boxing has way better footwork, and Karate is ironically, less versatile, because a Boxer can come at you from a variety of angles and punches much faster and is often much stronger. Try to imagine this fight, without the boxer having gloves to weigh his fists down.

This fight was so one sided, I kind of laughed. I even looked into generally how boxing vs karate matches go. They all point similiarly to fights like this

Loading Video...

Now if we were talking muay thai or something, that'd be a different story.

General conscious is most Karate practitioners are going to lose to most boxers at the lower level. Only perhaps a master with years of Karate experience and sparring stands any kind of chance.

Combine this with the fact that boxing is easier to learn, and even more effective, the boxer takes this solidly. Easily in most situations.

Anyways, boxing should take this if they are of equal skill.

It depends on who is more skilled, and if they are equal skill then it's 50/50.
