"Boner" Joke

After three months of laughing non-stop at the Batman comics "Bner" joke panels, I only have one question: What was the story behind it?

And please, don't say any jokes, because it really hurts when I laugh. Laughing for three months non-stop can leave you really hurt.

The word had a different meaning back then, same with gay.
