It's Implied he could do it, sure, He never actually killed anyone that way though since he fought no other super beings really and would just punch folks to death more or less, But he has similar feats..and did try to use mind control against one of his superiors who was evil..
@cattlebattle: BTW, generally speaking with the exception of Modern Era characters, Golden Age ones would be the most hardcore for sure Superman just straight up chucked a dude into the distance on one panel.

Yes I know they were more partial to killing than most modern characters (looks at Batman)...I mean that characters weren't that technical with there power usage, everything was pretty basic
