Aang vs Katara

Surprisingly, I don't think this has been done before, so lets find out who wins

For this battle, Aang has airbending only. No Avatar State

Teenage versions of both, feats from A:TLA and the comics apply

Fight takes place at the North Pole. Aang has his glider. Starting distance is 25 feet

Round 1:

Both are in character (they don't have any feelings for each other though, so they're as willing to fight each other as any other enemy)

The time is noon

Round 2:

Both have morals off

It is night and the moon is almost full (so no bloodbending)

Round 2 katara: a blood lusted master water bender in the north pool on the full moon come on man that is so unfair.

Aang's morals off too, and he holds back much more than Katara. It's not a full moon

Speed could be tricky when Katara controls the environment. Aang hold back much more than Katara, imo being moralless would affect him more

Aang stomps. Really. He does. Far faster, stronger, and agile than katara is, and his air bending would be too much for her.

As for the fight, it's tricky. Normally I'd say Aang because of his agility and how hard airbending is to counter, but the fight is in the North Pole. Waterbenders are, quite frankly, overpowered when they are completely surrounded by their element. Likely as an offset to them being so easy to separate from their element.

Round one I'll give to Aang for the majority. Maybe 7/10. Katara has proven herself to not have the best aim against highly evasive opponents like Ty Lee, and Aang is just as good an acrobat as Ty Lee is thanks to his airbending. Katara also taught Aang waterbending, which means Aang is intimately familiar with her waterbending forms and techniques and has experience sparring against her using her element. Katara, however, has never sparred with Aang while he's using his airbending as far as I can remember.

Round two is much closer as Katara gets so many environmental factors to boost her performance. Remember, the difference between the moon and no moon is basically the difference between beating Zuko and losing to Zuko, and when she had the moon AND was in the snow she one shot Zuko without effort. Both of these factors are substantial bonuses. So I'll give it to Katara 6/10.

@metaljimmor: nice analysis. To be fair, a large part of yet reason she "lost" to Zuko, imo at least, was because she let her guard down and he sucker punched her

How do you see the different morals in Rounds 1 and 2 affecting the outcome?

Aang will mostly likely get the bigger buff. Katara regularly throws sharp icicles and freezes people in ice (hard to tell if this is actually a killing shot in the show) while Aang gets to use the same cuts he did on the boulder on the drill with morals off.

I do think Katara takes both rounds because by the end of the series, she's far more skilled as a water bender than Aang is as an airbender (for several reasons. e.g. he had to learn all these other elements and such and even then, not in as much detail or with as many forms as people who learn only one element).

Also, in character, she has the potential for an amazing level of ruthlessness, improvisation and ingenuity (sweat bending, sudden state of matter changes, finale fight, etc). I do think she'd have the upper hand judging on that alone. Mobility would be a challenge though. In most circumstances, Aang would prefer to not fight, to be on the defensive. Actually, evasive (he actually seems to have a problem standing his ground in a fight). If she can counter that even for a short time (maybe freeze a foot or two), she'd be good.

I need to rewatch the show.

@arcus: Did he? Oh well, I'd still give it to Aang. Unsure of what morals off does as the show is iffy on what constitutes killing attacks.

@night4345: I don't think either Katara or Aang have ever actually killed anyone. Freezing people doesn't kill them, since we've had people be frozen and survive

That's my point. Throwing rocks at high speed, sending people flying, shooting fire (which is considered dangerous attacks except when it isn't), freezing and shooting sharp ice; people should regularly if not die then get gravely injured. Yet this only happens with lightning or when it's necessary for the story.

I see Aang being more agile and faster while his delivered attacks will be more powerful and stronger. I don't see Katara landing any meaningful hits although she is more versatile in fights with the way she uses her element imo.

Perhaps if you equalized speeds, it'd make for a more interesting battle.

I know this thread is a little old, but the way I see it is:

Round 1: Katara

Round 2: Aang

Morals on in round 1 will definitely keep Aang from winning there, but morals off Aang could potentially slice Katara in half or suffocate her.

Round 1: Katara. Aang will find a way to get KO'd.
