I'm going to go ahead a point out that the apes have guns. Bronze shields and abs aren't going to do anything, especially since the Spartans would run into open gun fire rather than take cover behind a tree or a rock. Spartans also have no ranged weapons other than throwing their spears, which wouldn't come close to apes with modern guns.Apes stomp

Without trees the ape's mobility is greatly decreased, and I don't see how they can break the Spartan formation. Spartans stomp

I'd give it to Apes both rounds. They have guns for round 1. Round 2 the Spartans are severely crippled without shields.

Both Rounds I say apes. they have better weapons and are intelligent apes without them.

Apes both rounds easy. Second round the Spartans have no weapons or shields. They're just regular humans. Trained but still regular. Apes are physically superior and Spartans aren't trained to fight apes. Apes slaughter

Apes have an overwhelming strength advantage in round 2. Spartans have no weapons, they have no training fighting this way. This is a stomp for apes both rounds.

The only interesting fight would be round 2 with Spartans having some weapons, but maybe not full gear.

They may not be experts h2h fighters without weapons but it's still better than the apes training and the apes strength advantage is not that massive.

.... Are you serious? Round One is going to be a massacre as a Phalanx Formation is going to run into some problems when the apes start opening up on it with assault rifles.

Round two is just as bad. Spartans are still humans. Humans fighting apes with their fist... is not going to end well. Chimps are five times stronger then a human man. This isn't a fight so much as a massacre. I don't know how you think the Spartans would win that... At least give them their spears or short swords before this. Honestly, this is more of a spite match then anything.

Round two: if the spartans fight good tey can win depending of what kind of apes if there are only chimps the spartans stomp.

Training doesn't really much s*** here. Animals don't need training because they are born knowing how to fight. It's natural. A 135 lb ape can easily overwhelm any man. A 185 pound chimp? It's going to rip their arms off and wave at him while it tanks any hit he can dish out with his feet. Brute strength+simple+efficient fighting style made to maim and kill=round 2 curbstomp battle.

@xmenhulk: as long as the Apes don't have guns and they are mainly chimps and not silver backs the Spartans have this.

Apes both rounds for reasons stated. Apes with guns stomp, h2h apes stomp, hell just a few gorillas could beat the spartans.

A chimp is five times as strong as a comparable human man. As in said man is benching 180 and the chimp is benching 900. At five years old, a Chimp's strength surpasses a full-grown man.

Now, while most greeks did practice marital arts in the form of a very brutal and efficient wrestling, that isn't going to mean much when said chimps can rip their limbs off and tear off their faces. I mean it... literally... tear the skin from their faces. There is a reason humanity has developed weaponry, we need it. We did not go around killing animals with our bare hands because we tend to get our faces smashed in (We are not very high on the totem poll without our inventions) which is why the Spartans should be given spears and their short swords.

Round 1 : easy since Apes have guns, take that away and and spartans stomp because of their formation.

Round 2 : i wanna say Spartans in a though fight. The apes do have an advantage with their claws and teeth but the spartans has it in size and strength (For the most part, Ape like gorillas will be stronger) and then there's their mindset. Apes are like people with families who will fight furiously to protect their homes while the Spartans are total war fanatics. They'll fight to the last man and with the same tenacity no matter the losses in their ranks. I'd bet the apes morale would break halfway into the fight by the sheer brutality of the spartans.

Did you not read my post just a little up about how a chimp has five times the strength of a man? We aren't talking about four hundred pounds, we are talking 900 to well over a half-ton of muscle power. They will tear a man, including a spartan, limb from limb. These chimps/apes are not mindless beast. This fight is incredibly one-sided.

Humans are incredibly weak when compared to most of the other animals in the world. We are at the top of the food chain thanks to our intelligence which allowed us to make weaponry. Without weaponry, we get torn to shreds.

Now about your point on chimpanzees being stronger them humans.

A chimpanzee is stronger then a human in pure strength yes but not exactly 5times over. the strength of an chimpanzee being nearly 5times stronger then humans is relative to their Size just as an Ant can carry it's own weight 50times over while a human cannot. Now a normal chimp is about half the size of a normal man so the chimps is still purely stronger the spartans.

However that still doesn't change much since that only gives them an edge if it comes to wrestling, the Spartans can still punch and kick them around due to the chimps lack of weight and limb length. The best thing the chimps can do is jump on them, crush them with their arms and bite them. Their punches would miss half the time due to their lack of precise muscle control, and the spartans would be able to trow them around fairly easy due to them only being around 40kg(88pounds). And the spartans are experts on close combat. They'd be able to react and counter the chimps attacks easier then they would against a man due to again the spartans superior size.

I wasn't kidding on the 900 to over half a ton. That is how much most adult chimps can lift, so yes, they are vastly stronger then spartans. Kicking a chimp would be an incredibly stupid idea as when the chimp punches back, they are going to break something. Trow them around? Do you mean throw? Or... tow? Either one sounds incredibly stupid as you would have to grab them and lift them... they aren't just going to sit there and do nothing as you grab them. As this is a battle with hundreds of people, it is going to be very close, so no, I doubt many spartans will find room to 'duck and weave'.

Koshi: The Goths and Gauls that the Romans fought may have ended differently if the Goths and Gauls were five times as strong as their roman counterpart. Discipline in Roman ranks mattered because of their fighting style which revolved around their.... weaponry. Something the Spartan's lack. You cannot do a phalanx formation without shields. The Spartans would not have a formation as there is no greek formation based upon a large group of men without their shields.

So yes, this comes down to human vs chimp. The only thing 'discipline' does for the Spartans is allow them to work together better then the Chimps, but these are not normal chimps and have at, or very damn near, human intelligence and coupled with their superior instincts will be doing the same. AS the fight is to the death, there is no worry about morale.

@wut: I already gave the reasons why the Spartans would win with their superiority in combat speed, flexibility, expenrience and teamwork.

I looked it up and that's some impressive strength they have but that only comes in handy for grabbing, tossing and crushing. All witch can be avoided by keeping them at distance with kicks and punches. Strength doesn't equal striking power.

Now i was gonna say that the spartans formations and tactics would give them the majority but i re-read the OP and saw that this takes place in the forest so yeah the apes takes the majority with the forest giving them the clear win.

@dewin50: Once again... there is no formation! You need shields to make a phalanx formation! The entire formation is based around the shield! Without their equipment, thus no shield, there is no formation! What Tactics? They start right in front of each other! In a random encounter! There will not be time to set up traps and there is no way in hell Spartans are outrunning chimps in a forest.

..... Yes, strength does relate to punching power. Unless you are trying to argue that having superior muscle density does not make you punch harder then if you had normal which would then imply that all super humans like Master Chief and Space Marines don't hit harder. The only reason it says grabbing is because chimps don't tend to throw punches. However, these chimps are near human intelligence, and there is no reason they can't.

They could start in an open plains, and the apes would still win.

In an open field the Spartan hoplite formation is pretty useless. The entire reason they fought at the hot gates was because its narrow field afforded the Spartans the advantage they could exploit.

@misterguyman: The other seven thousand greeks also made it easier to hold it... and the Athenian navy also made it possible by not allowing the Persians to.. just... sail around. Buttttt Hollywood loves their theatrics. Movie made me hit my head against the wall so many times.

The kick in this is when the Apes don't have guns... the Spartans don't get their weapons, so no shield means no formation.

Just fully read the OP and yeah... neither round allows the Spartans a way to form defensible formations. The Forests in the first round are terrible for phalanxes and an open field with no equipment is just slaughter.

@wut: who said anything about a phalanx formation? Want to know a basic formation they could do? They all group into a square where the guys furthers out take on the chimps with the guys behind them supporting them. And i hope you know that tactics doesn't mean setting traps..

No, punching power doesn't meant strength. Striking power is how big of a fist you have and how fast it's going when hitting. Strength helps propel the arm but due to the chimps short arms they don't have time to accelerate enough. If you still don't believe me look it up.

And lastly no they wouldn't win in an open field but i guess it's agree to disagree at this point. You see it that way and i see it this way.

@dewin50: First off, Chimps have fairly long arms. Secondly, muscle mass is very important and directly related to punching power. Stop pulling shit out of your ass. Fast punches do not have the same power as slower ones because when you punch as fast as possible, you do not put your weight behind it. It is the difference between a jab and a straight.

How the fuck do you think they are going to us this super awesome formation? "Alright guys, box this shit! Box it! As I fight from the front you guys... uh.... push me from behind!" It does not work in a brawl. Most formations, pre-gunpowder, tend to break open and dissolve once the fighting truly begins. They have no means of keeping the apes from breaking their formation as they lack spears and shields.

3. You don't seem to understand the meaning of formations. They're not flawless however the most basic of formations does give an edge against a unorganized force.
