Hello again folks and thanks for voting in the last Showdown -- what a close race, we really had some great entries. Any of you who aren't keen on DC COMICS aren't gonna be too happy as I introduce the next SHOW-OFF subject:
AQUAMAN; King of the Seven Seas! AQUAMAN has always been one of my favorite superheroes (don't laugh) and the poor dude has really gotten a raw deal over the years. There's so many different versions and looks...show us ANY of your renditions: Silver Age, Hook Hand, Dweller in the Depths, Batman: The Brave & the Bold, Time & Tide...whatever you're diggin'! Or maybe you may want to give a shot at creating your own new look for AQUAMAN...that's okay too!
Contest will last just over 2 weeks, starting today 1/28 and finishing up on 2/7/2011 at 12:00PM EST! Sound good?

@Satansunday: that's a beauty of the king. Like how you used the green, normally that's the color that kills him but in that design it actually enhances it. Those boot scales rock too, looks like he could give someone a swift kick and then hook em :)
THANKS ALOT, MY THOUGHT IS THAT IF WE WERE TO REBOOT ARTHUR, THE SUIT WOULD BE A SORT OF LIVING ORGANIC CORAL THAT ADJUSTS TO THE WEIGHT AND TEMPERATURE AS WELL AS COMBAT AS HE NEEDS IT(THINK MOVIE SPAWN) I MEAN THE GUY CAN TALK TO AQUATIC LIFE RIGHT? SO WHY COULDN'T HE USE THE CREATURES OF THE SEA TO CREATE HIS ARMOR? iN A MORE EXTREME VERSION i WOULD MAKE HIM LOOK LIKE A MEMBER OF DAVEY JONES' CREW IN PIRATES 2,BUT FOR COMIC PURPOSES I KEPT IT CLOSE TO THE ICONIC STYLE WE ARE USED TO SEEING WITH THE LEGENDARY 60 PLUS YEAR OLD CHARACTERS. THE BLACK/GREY PARTS OF THE SUIT WOULD BE ROUGH LIKE SHARK SKIN, THE ORANGE/GOLD PARTS LIKE CORAL AND THE GREEN LIKE SCALES.I SUPPOSES THE SUIT COULD ALSO ALTER IN COLOR TO COMPENSATE FOR THE WATERS AROUND HIM. I WAS WATCHING A SPECIAL ON DEEP SEA CREATURES THE OTHER DAY AND THE SHOW EXPLAINED THAT MANY DEEP SEA LIFE IS COLORED REDDISH ORANGE BECAUSE MOST SEA LIFE IS COLOR BLIND,THUS THE COLOR WOULD APPEAR BLACK TO MOST OTHER SEA LIFE KEEPING THEM AS INVISIBLE AS POSSIBLE. THE SUIT/ARMOR WOULD ALSO GIVE HIM ADDED STREAMLINING FOR SWIMING AT SUPER SONIC SPEEDS.DID HE EVER OFFICIALLY GET HIS HAND BACK? AND I DON'T MEAN THAT "LADY OF THE LAKE " HAND B.S. -IF NOT THEN THE HOOK WOULD BE MADE OUT OF WHAT IS LEFT OF POSIDEN'S TRIDENT WHICH WOULD BE A GREAT STORY I WAS THINKING OF TO SORT OF KICK START AQUAMAN'S RE-BOOT "THE FALL OF ATLANTIS" WHERE THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD GO TO WAR WITH THE UNDERWORLD KINGDOM.I AM SURE THEY HAVE DONE SOMETHING LIKE THIS BEFORE BUT HEY, COMICS HAVE BEEN RECYCLING STORIES FOR DECADES RIGHT? JUST MY TAKE HOPE YA ALL LIKE IT.
@thecheckeredman: I think there was a Costume Contest featuring Aquaman awhile ago as well.
@Satansunday: Pretty imaginative take on Aquaman. I think its been hard for DC to really make Aquaman "edgy" when the Silver Age renditions and the blasted Super Friends cartoon really made him well, namby pamby.
I like the blue and white costume color scheme they tried but it was a bit too "busy" I guess.
@Decept-O: Not Dissaggreeing there with you on the image face lift but I do feel the right angle on the character can accomplish miracles.They took away his wife and child and his arm in the 90's and everyone seemed to like the rougher,Namor like take on him.The Justice League cartoon followed suit with that angle (Dwayne Mc Duffie did a great job on him in the episodes he was featured) the only problem was when they decided to turn him "Mamby Pamby" again a few years back, but even on the Brave and the Bold as corny as they depicted him they still kept an element of the pirate era with the Beard and earring. It can be done,Remeber how Lame Batman was in the 60's? and we as a collective forgave that mess. Not neccesarily the TV series (which I still love) but in the books-Bats really had a lame run during the love generation till Neal Adams and Denny O'Neil brought him back to his Darker roots.
Yah Caught me there,Had the Aquaman Underoos as a kid and at the ripe old age of 5 thought the symbols looked the same.I am a Trek Fan as well so that was just my lil hommage to Starfleet. Live Long and Prosper there,TadPole!
@Satansunday: Yes, I agree, too, having a "rougher" Aquaman is ideal. While not fond of the harpoon hand or the water hand, it was still an interesting twist on the character. No, I think you know what I mean, Arthur's depiction, primarily from the Super Friends is how a lot of people envision Aquaman. Which sucks. He is a King of the Seas after all. I really like how he was depicted in Kingdom Come, although his interests were self-serving in that story but visually and story-wise that was great.

oh man, that just gave me shivers thinking of some NASTY chaffing :) you know it does look very starfleetish, never noticed that before but it is also his legit symbol at different times in the game.

Damn! Had to go and choose my favorite character. I've got no choice now but to participate. I'm not sure how I'm going to carve out the necessary hours in my schedule to do this, but I have no alternative. It .. is.. on!

@payno: you're drawing was timely. watched A Shark's Tale with my daughter last night trying to get her back to sleep and there's that part where Oscar's boss is showing him where he's at on the pecking order. It reminded me of your drawing.
I want to play risque with this piece... being a fan of Aquaman... I always find him as the pretty boy of Superfriends, as Batman as the mr. rebel guy, superman as the mr. nice guy, green lantern as the playboy and robin as the tag-along.
I wanted to do a calender girl but in male version... will still paint this one... what you guys (and gals) think?

he didn't always have a hook hand. and the current version doesn't either.
@IcePrince_X: ah leave it to the ladies to dictate the fashion. Very nice, they're gonna have to make a flick called 'Gills Gone Wild' to use that one :)
@Caligula: very nice one, you got a lot of his history in one shot. It definitely pays great homage to the classic.
@IcePrince_X: not a bad, a very reasonable rendition. Figure he would have a tremendous swimmers physique and the blonde hair and blue, mixed with his slightly awkward interaction with humans as depicted in JLA year one..you got a winner
Here is my entry..I am a huge fan, and I always liked the clean shaven orange and green, I think my favorite version is Ji, Lee's rendition as seen in his run on Superman. good stuff so far enjoy!
