. . . . so here comes the "but". . . . But I have to say that I think that DC is really dropping the ball on the redesign of Supes here. When it comes to the advent of re-imagining these characters, wouldn't it be fun to go all out and work with designs and ambitions that are bordering on completely different. Certainly things couldn't be compromised, like details such as him being a white male, his height and eye color.
I feel that DC is playing it safe here, using words and phrases to emphasize that they are making sweeping changes, like "modernize their characters", "more contemporary or appealing". These terms are made moot with the release of this cover to the pending Superman #1 due out in September. I see Superman here but not a newly invigorated character with the pop-culture appeal that I feel DC is striving for. This is Superman, the Superman that I grew up with that everyone knows with the exception of even sillier boots than the ones he's treading in currently and some lines o his suit that ad nothing to his visual presence. I feel the same about Aquaman though I'm not as deeply rooted in that character as I am the Man of Steel.
To the right I have added a little Superman reboot of my own. I'm not saying that this is better than what has been provided by DC, I'm just going through the motions of taking a pop-culture icon and playing with the look a little. I have to ask you guys if you think that this is a redesigned Superman by DC or a cop out with a brainwashing tagline? If you're like me and you do think so, I would challenge anyone of you to submit your Awesome Superman designs to this thread and share why you think your design would be a better re visioning of the character.
