Lighting does play an important role in mood. What I learned since I was a kid was to draw a circle or even an X or an arrow pointing wherever the light was coming from and use it as your guidance as you add blacks and grays for the shadow contrast.

At times you may have multiple light sources, so of course it gets a bit more tricky at that point. As you use this small guideline you will see a noticeable improvement over time in how your art is judged by people at the professional level.

Even pros don't always get it right, but that's not an excuse to not try harder! :p
