Here is the step by step process behind the Generation Hope #15 cover.
The concept for the cover was put Sebastian Shaw and Hope as allies.
These are the 2 initial sketches, I made them in Photoshop with the Cintiq, I liked more the composition of the second sketch but due to the rush deadline I had to go with the sketch on the right side. At this point I just focus on working the composition on the scene and present the general attitude of the characters, I don't pay attention to proportions, line quality or any details, I just go for the general idea.
Once I get the sketch approved I star polishing the sketch with the Cintiq until I get to the level I want.
Once I'm satisfied with the result I print the image on 11 x 17 paper and trace the image on a light table on a Bristol board with the same measures, using: H and 2H pencils led holders.
For this next step I trace all with ink using a Staedtler (.05, .1, .3, .5, .8); I wish I could use brushes but I still have to practice on those. Once this is fully inked I scan the image to begin coloring in Photoshop.
Then I start laying flats (base colors) , in this occasion I used warm colors since I already know the background is going to be a fire phoenix, In this process I use a hard edge brush with 100% opacity and flow.
For this step I put a layer on mode multiply on top of my flats, using a gray tone for shadows, starting with an eraser to remove the shadows to bring out the base tones and creating volume on my characters that way, at this point I just try to cover general areas without much detail.
I added a regular layer on top of my shadows, whit a hard edge brush with the opacity to 70 and flow to 25 started laying the lights.
Add another layer of shadows and lights, only to detail the image and work in the background using motion blur effects
Once I feel comfortable with the image I compressed all the layers and worked on top of my single file making color corrections withh color balance and hue saturation , also adding special effects like sparks and highlights.
