NICE GOOSE YA BEAT ME TO IT.
Steampunk is a sub-genre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or real technological developments like the computer occurring at an earlier date. Other examples of steampunk contain alternate history-style presentations of "the path not taken" of such technology as dirigibles, analog computers, or digital mechanical computers (such as Charles Babbage's Analytical engine); these frequently are presented in an idealized light, or with a presumption of functionality.

And yes, he is a Cat. Schroedinger's Cat. The Schroedinger's Cat.
You see, there was once this man who had a cat. And this other man who was sent to kill him (but not the cat).
The first man was a scientist that decided to test a particular theory one night and placed the cat in the box. The second man decided that night would be the perfect night to do his job.
Things happen. Stuff breaks that shouldn't break. Both men are dead when the police find them. The cat, when they look in the box, appears to be alive and well and begging for attention.
A few days later, the cat appears to be dead in the house of the new person taking care of it. The body of the assassin goes missing from the morgue.
More shenanigans occur until the cat and the killer meet again, back at the box, both drawn to it. Each having half a life now.
The cat points out that together they could have a whole life. Yes, the cat is the one that does that.
The man agrees.
Schroedinger's Cat walks out of the building.
