Awesome Art Picks: Spider-Man, Batman, X-Men and More

Happy New Year. How long until we can stop saying that? Welcome to the first 'Awesome Art Picks' of the new year. Each and every week we search high and low for cool art from comic book artists. They often post sketches and commissions on their websites, blogs and Tumblrs. We want to make sure everyone gets a chance to see them. Many of these artists also arrange commissions through their sites so be sure to check them out for more informaiton.

Since we just celebrated the New Year, Skottie Young posted his hello and goodbye to the years on his website. He also posted a Darkwing Duck. Often when he posts these sketches, the originals are available for purchase.

Last week the final issue of Sean Murphy's PUNK ROCK JESUS went on sale. It's a great series and you should check it out. Sean will be on next week's 'Invincibly Super Massive Comic Book Podcast of Stuff' and check out these awesome Madman and Batman sketches he posted on his Deviant Art Page last month.

There's a new Tumblr page devoted to "Mohawk" Storm. One of Peter Nguyen's Storm sketches (from 2010) was posted, which he reposted on his Tumblr. Mohawk Storm is indeed pretty cool.

I'm drawing a blank but someone pointed me to Dave Wilkins' Deviant Art Page where I saw this rad Gatchaman drawing. Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets is one of my all time favorites.

Francesco Francavilla has been pretty busy lately and hasn't had a chance to update his blog. He did post this older piece of Swamp Thing vs Man-Thing on his Twitter.

Chris Giarrusso posted a few sketches on his website this week. He's been putting some up for sale so check to see if they've sold out already or not. He also posted a 'Trogdor the Burninator vs Iron Fist and Strong Bad.' And you can play the Trogdor game by clicking HERE.

And in case you haven't seen it before, check out this older piece Chris drew of the Comic Vine founders, Dave Snider, myself and Ethan Lance.

Philip Tan posted a couple more sketches on his Facebook page. He's also posting some penciled pages for PHANTOM STRANGER there.

Brett Booth rocked it on TEEN TITANS this week and he posted Batman and Nightwing sketches on his blog.

Robert Atkins posted a Hulk pic on his blog. You can go there to find out his rates for commissions.

Eric Guzman posted a few 'animated' versions of DC and Marvel characters on his Deviant Art Page. Anyone besides me wishes we could see this happen?

Agnes Garbowska posted a few sketches on her Tumblr. She's getting ready for this year's convention season and you can find out her commission information by clicking HERE.

Michael Walsh posted this commission of Poison Ivy on his Tumblr.

Freddie E. Williams II posted some more sketches on his Twit Pic Page.

Last week we saw the early stages of Marcio Takara's Spider-Man sketch. This week he posted the inked and colored versions on his Tumblr. He also posted a couple more 'tiny heroes."

Paolo Rivera posted this interesting pic for his "special lady's" birthday on his blog. I'm sure you can easily figure out who they are.

Terry Dodson posted the penciled version to his upcoming variant cover for FANTASTIC FOUR #4 on his Deviant Art Page. Since he also posted the finished version, I thought I'd include that, even though it will appear in an actual comic.

On another note... I wonder if any of those really talented artists ever make their own porn, imagine the possibilites.. jeez.

same here, and I know I seem like a hypocrite with this avatar, but I don't like the ones shown here. I prefer yale stewart's art any day.

Tan, Booth and Takara are just great. And those animated ones are very good. Had seen the DC ones before but not the Marvels ones. CA's costume looks much better here than in the live-action movie. That costume just wasn't good. His previous one, in his solo movie was better.

Those animated characters are awesome. It would be so cool if they made a new Justice League cartoon and Avengers cartoon with those designs.

Eric Guzman's work looks very Bruce Timm-ish and that's not a bad thing. DC animation give this man a job!

Well it was your opinion, that due to his opinion, "he cry somewhere else". He as well as myself are artists and at times find ourselves being criticized with likes and dislikes. We have to take the good with the bad, so he has a right to state what he thought.

Zzombie is one of the nicest people you can ask for as a person and I felt that he wasn't being nasty in stating that he wished there was new fresher talent being used, not saying that the old was bad.

He isn't wrong, that's what comics are all about. When sales go down on a book they eventually need a new rotation of talent. He was just stating his opinion but never did I read any kind of negativity towards any of the artists or particular piece. If I missed it let me know...

We both live here in the U.S and last I heard we can state our opinions freely. !n my opinion he wasn't being disrespectful to anyone, I thought you were a little harsh being that he did not say anything offensive to anyone in particular, sadly maybe to you even though it wasn't directed at you....

We are living in a world were people are waaay to sensitive and I feel we need to make room for both sides on any given subject, as long as we treat each other with respect.

If you and your friends are that much more talented, submit your art to G-Man and I'm sure he'll post it. And as far as crying somewhere else being rude or whatever you think, the world's a mean place my friend. Get ready!

You are tooo funny...."If you and your friends are that much more talented, submit your art" My art has been part of this forum for years, not that Zzombie or myself ever compared our art to the ones that G-man posted. That wasn't even the point, duuh.

I'm sorry but, in what way exactly was I disrespectful? All I asked is that maybe, occasionally, we could rotate out one or 12 of the baby hero versions and maybe rotate in another deserving artist who works just as hard. And maybe just maybe, give them some admiration for their hard work.

I've been an artist all my life. And I know how having your work shown in a regular feature like this can be a big boon to someone who pours their heart and soul into their work. Seems like maybe once in a while it wouldn't hurt to post someone else's art instead, lest the column become stagnant. (and for the record, no I am not suggesting my work be shown)

My suggestion was criticism meant to be constructive. Perhaps even helpful. Not a complaint. And I'll post it wherever I please.

This has to be my favourite awesome art pics set yet!
