Each week we gather up as many cool comic sketches we can find. These are sketches that won't appear in comics. Artists often do sketches and commissions and post them on their websites, blogs and Tumblrs. They're too cool not to be seen. Many of these artists also do commissions or sell original art on their sites so be sure to check them out for more information. If you're aware of any artists' sites we're overlooking, don't hesitate to let us know.

There's been a lot of talk and interest in Spider-Man lately. Paolo Rivera is no stranger to the character. He posted some recent Spider-Man related commissions on his blog.

== TEASER ==

Earlier this week we saw a Marvel teaser and it appears that Punisher and Elektra may be hooking up in THUNDERBOLTS. Phil Noto posted a sketch of the two along with Mary and Matthew from Downton Abbey and Thomas Jerome Newton from Fringe on his Tumblr.

Skottie Young posted a sketch of Chamber and Radagast on his site this week. Usually when he posts sketches he offers them for sale. Sadly, they are already sold.

Michael Walsh posted a couple pics this week on his Tumblr. He drew Dredd while watching the movie and also picked up the new Morbius comic.

Gene Gonzales posts several commissions and what he calls "Conventionless Convention Sketches" on his blog.

Denis Medri always posts a variety of sketches on his Deviant Art Page. Check out his Beatles, Darryl (from The Walking Dead tv show) and David Bowie.

Daniel HDR sometimes takes commissions through his Tumblr and Instagram. Here's some recent ones posted.

Chris Giarrusso posted a recent cover sketch on his website.

You might be wondering what the story is here. He posted on his site that he was supposed to draw Raphael but instead drew him with Michelangelo's nunchucks. He believes Laura Martin, who colored the sketch, put the word balloon in. The fan that commissioned it even got the comic professionally graded.

Todd Nauck posted a Power Man and Iron Fist sketch on his Tumblr this week. The pic really conveys the fact that you do not want to mess with these guys.

Robert Atkins posted a Superman commission and a Spider-Man sketch (he quickly did for his nephew) on his blog. He even colored it with markers.

Agnes Garbowska has been working on a couple prints she'll have available at Wizard World Portland and other conventions this year. They'll likely be colored. Agnes posted the early versions on her Tumblr.

Mike McKone posted a couple sketches of Spider-Man and Union Jack on his TwitPic page.

Sean "Cheeks" Galloway posted this Batman sketch on his Deviant Art page called "Pimp Slapped!"

That's it for this week. Hope you enjoyed the selections.

All of 'em great, but between Paulo Rivera, Phil Noto, and Mike McKone, I don't know whose batch I like more...

All of 'em SO GOOD!

Anyone else seeing David Bowie?

@Onemoreposter: I totally thought this was Bowie when I first saw it.

Dude, totally!

I just wanted to post the very same question but you were faster. This is a beautiful portrait. I would like to know if it's pure coincidence or if Noto had have Bowie in mind when he drew this (or was listing to Bowie perhaps)?

@DonFelipe:

Focus on the nose, ears, and eyebrows. Those are identical! The eyes are very close. Even the hairline seems to be a direct invert of the image above. This artist definitely used Bowie as a template. The more I look at the noses, the more I think he used the exact above image for reference.

Great selection this week!

Really digging Daniel HDR's work.

From the very first moment on I thought I was looking at Bowie; and not Newton (who?). Putting the real Bowie next to it, they surely look identical. The major difference is the mouth and the bigger lower lip respectively, but that's just the angle. This so funny! Especially with the other Bowie picture (Aladdin Sane) below. I guess it's because Bowie has just released a new single this week.

I don't believe I've ever seen Gene Gonzales' work before but his Rogue sketch is really quite striking. Phil Noto is always amazing.

@DonFelipe, @Onemoreposter: Thomas Jerome Newton is David Bowie's character in the The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976). It's a nutty film but I'd recommend it. :)

Awwwh yeahhh, Bowie...! And that Gwen Stacy actually looks like whatsherface... Emma Stone!

Ha! It is David Bowie after all! That explains why they look almost identical, and the character in Fringe is a homage to Bowie and The Man Who Fell to Earth. It all makes sense now.

Thanks for the info, randalmeister. Will add the movie to my watchlist!

#14 Posted by randalmeister (84 posts) - - Show Bio

@DonFelipe: Whoa... That's a bit roundabout... There's a character on Fringe crafted as an homage to Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth?!? I may need to start watching Fringe... :)

Besides the new single, Bowie turned 66 this past Wednesday. That might explain him popping-up (awesomely) twice among this week's art picks.

Yup! According to Wikipedia (The Man Who Fell to Earth), in Fringe, there's a character named after Bowie's real name and another one (Newton) named after his character from the movie.

The Paulo Rivera's Green Goblin looks suspicious. Like he just took a poop in Aunt May's toilet waiting for Peter (Well Ock now but for the best, awesome, classic version), Peter. to find out.

Michael Walsh, always killing it. Union Jack was cool too. That guy doesn't get enough love.

That Beatles and Daryl sketch is awesome!! Thumbs up!

"The Man Who Fell To Earth" will melt your mind. And, YES his eyes looked that way after he was forced to remove his contacts. (Or, when his girlfriend walked into the bathroom and saw him taking them out!) see the movie.

I had an original drawn by Kerry Gammill of Powerman / Ironfist from the '80s back when he was drawing them.

Don't know where I packed it.

All good art.

V3 Screw Kick !!!!!!!!!!!!

The Beatles resemblance is poor in some. Especially Paul McCartney who has never looked anything like that.

@Onemoreposter: Never would have picked up on that. Great catch!

Couple of good Spidey pics this week. Always preferred him in black the way Steve intended.

That Pryor picture: Hello! The demons in that picture are equally awesome. And I'm off to find a Noto art book. That guy is amazing. (Downton Abbey? Perfect.)

it's the Skottie Young and Paolo Rivera and guests show. That's not a complaint either.

I thought at first everyone wa over-hyping Phil Noto, but seeing his Punisher and Elektra for the first time, I have only this to say...Finalmente, an Elektra that doesn't look like a transvestite with botched plastic surgery.

Now I'm excited to see his Red Hulk. Hopefully he'll look like a bleeding red monster than a Schwarzenegger stand in.

Agnes is the best. I don't even care.

Gwen Stacy in that first pick Paolo Rivera looks a lot like Emma Stone to me.

So.....awesome.....

Thanks for pointing that out. It's great to have so many Bowie fans on Comicvine. :P

Here's why his eyes look different (from Wikipedia, again):

Bowie received a serious injury at school in 1962 when his friend George Underwood punched him in the left eye during a fight over a girl. Doctors feared he would become blind in that eye. After a series of operations during a four-month hospitalisation, his doctors determined that the damage could not be fully repaired and Bowie was left with faulty depth perception and a permanently dilated pupil. The latter condition has misled some to believe that Bowie has different coloured eyes, when in reality both irises are the same blue colour. Despite their altercation, Underwood and Bowie remained good friends, and Underwood went on to create the artwork for Bowie's early albums.

Noto's portrait of Bowie is really cool. I like it more and more...

#34 Posted by V_Scarlotte_Rose (6536 posts) - - Show Bio

@DonFelipe: I'm not quite a big enough fan to know they weren't actually two colours. Somebody told me that and it looked like it was true.

His eyes are different to each other though, so at least I got that right. :)

Well, I'm just a fan of his early records but hadn't heard about the movie and the thing with his eyes until yesterday and today. I may have noticed before that his eyes look a bit different but I thought he was wearing contact lenses. It's interesting to find out about this over an artwork on Comicvine. By the way, I think the portrait you posted above is the original image Noto used as model. Hair style, mouth, and shadows are identical. The only difference is the face in Noto's image is larger and of course the eye...
