Awesome Art Picks: Batman, Jean Grey, Optimus Prime and More

This is the point in the week that we sit back and enjoy gazing at amazing comic art that will never appear in actual comics. Artists often do sketches for fun or commissions and post them on their blogs, websites and Tumblrs. You can arrange your own commissions with some of them through their sites so be sure to check them out for more information.

Not only is Khary Randolph a cool guy, he's also a great artist. I first met Khary at C2E2 earlier this year when he took the Mystery Art Challenge ("Captain America and a Pizza"). Check out these recent sketches he posted on his Tumblr.

Paolo Rivera is often posting the commissions he does on his blog. He also posts lots of great behind-the-scenes reference shots that he does.

Have you read this week's AMERICAN VAMPIRE by Scott Snyder with art by Rafael Albuquerque? It was a punch in the gut. Check out this sketch of Aquaman Rafael posted on his Twitter.

Michael Walsh posted this elegant Wolverine sketch on his Tumblr this week.

Every time I see a Marvel character on Chris Giarrusso's website, I get extremely happy and sad. Mini Marvels was such a blast. Even the simply Wolverine head fills me with joy. He's also been doing a bunch of Image variants for their anniversary. Chris posted the penciled and inked version of the MORNING GLORIES cover.

Todd Nauck posted a couple sketches this week on his Instagram page. I really dig that Rogue.

I love Sean "Cheeks" Galloway's Superman posted on his Deviant Art Page. And check out his Link as well.

Daniel HDR posted more commissions on his Tumblr. I'm such a Space Ghost fan. I dug that miniseries DC published in 2007**. I'd love to see another but I doubt that will happen.

Joel Gomez posted some more Marvel/UppderDeck sketch cards on this Tumblr.

Mahmud Asrar posted a couple great sketches this week on his Tumblr. I love it anytime someone posts a Jean Grey sketch.

Mike McKone posted a couple sketches on his TwitPic page this week. Check out his Robin and THOR #252 cover recreation.

Agnes Garbowska has been in Japan at a convention. She managed to post this great Gambit and Juibilee sketch on her Tumblr.

What are your thoughts on Denis Medri's 'Rockabilly Batman' sketches? There is a fan page for the idea and check out his versions of all these characters he posted on his Deviant Art page.

Robert Atkins posted this cool Bucky/Winter Soldier sketch on his blog this week.

Mike Mayhew posted a couple Marvel Premier Sketch card on his Twitter page.

Brett Booth posted a few new sketches this week on his blog. The first is his rejected version of EARTH 2 Flash. Doesn't look bad to me. He also posted the Superman Family as well as Zealot.

That's it for this week. If we're missing any professional artist's site or blog, let me know and I'll get them on my radar. We'll have another installment next week.

'Rockabilly Batman'? I'd read it.

#7 Posted by InnerVenom123 (27553 posts) - 5 months, 22 days ago - Show Bio

I seriously get the feeling that the Rockabilly Batman dude is gonna end up making a comic about it at some point.

I mean, we finally got a picture of his Batman and Joker.

It's a matter of time at this point.

Galloway's Superman pieces win this week I say!

Am I the only one who doesn't care for Rockabilly Batman?! I loved the concept but I'm not a fan of the executions. Maybe if I saw a finished penciled inked and colored piece or the same designs done by an artist with a less cartoony style.

Michael Walsh's "simple" Wolverine piece....yeah....great stuff! Yes it is simple I agree but that is what is so lovely about it.

Robert Atkins, great as always, Brett Booth...damn diggity...., Mike McKone, love the action and colors...wow... Mahmud Asrar his Rocketeer and Jean Grey both superb.

Rafael Albuquerque's Aquaman, well, looks a bit like an image of Wolverine to me. Sorry. My one critique I guess and I rarely say anything like that, but it looks off to me.

Ultra-Man!

Denis Medri has a unique twist on Batman to say the least. His other works are impressive, but I really really love that version of Catwoman here!

Enjoyed 'em all but I can't fawn over everybody all the time...*phew*....

rockabilly batman is really growing. some one team up a great writer and the artist and make a comic book.

#18 Posted by Crimsonlord53 (937 posts) - 5 months, 21 days ago - Show Bio

That marvel girl outfit is starting to grow on me maybe all it takes is a good artist to make it look good.

Disagree. Love the art. Its rough and gritty- seems like it would be a perfect fit for the concept.

Optimus Prime and Zealot!

#37 Posted by supergmoney (5 posts) - 5 months, 21 days ago - Show Bio

Is it wrong to say I think I prefer Booth's Earth 2 costume for Jay Garrick over the current one?

#40 Posted by save.me.now (172 posts) - 5 months, 21 days ago - Show Bio

Asrar's always good. Like nearly everyone else I love the rockabilly batman. The Walsh wolverine, Link and Zelda, and Super Crossing Guard.

#41 Posted by TheRyanHimself (37 posts) - 5 months, 21 days ago - Show Bio

I prefer that Earth 2 Flash to be honest. I'd love to see it colored.

#44 Posted by sweatboy (692 posts) - 5 months, 20 days ago - Show Bio

Brett Booth takes this one, (is that Earth 2 Flash or Earth 3 Crime Syndicate Flash? Earth 2 Flash used to be Jay Garrick but i'm not keeping up with new 52)

#45 Posted by urstenky (9 posts) - 5 months, 20 days ago - Show Bio

Most of the sketches are great but the manga/cartoony sketches (ugh), may be for some but not for me. The Mike Mckone art was the best especially the Thor cover recreation and his Robin.

#46 Posted by kid Apollo (514 posts) - 5 months, 20 days ago - Show Bio

Brett Booth's Zealot is awesome, so much bett then the inunspired crap Liefeld put out a few months ago
