Mark Waid and Fiona Staples Announced as New Creative Team for ARCHIE #1

It's no secret that Archie Comics has been shaking and mixing things up lately. We've seen the Death of Archie in the LIFE WITH ARCHIE storyline set in the future. Some of the characters are experiencing some dark (and mature) adventures in AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE and CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA. Lena Duhham will be writing a four-part story. Archie is even rebranding its Red Circle Comics imprint to Dark Circle Comics.

They're not done with the changes yet.

In 2015, the long-running ARCHIE series will be relaunched with a new #1 issue. ARCHIE COMICS #1 first started back in 1942 (Archie firs appeared in 1941's PEP COMICS #22). The series title changed to just ARCHIE with issue 114. The creative team on the new ARCHIE #1 will be Mark Waid and Fiona Staples.

Mr. Waid said his primary goal was to return Archie to a modern audience, which included restoring the contemporary attitudes that the teenagers of Riverdale had lost.

“Over the years, some of the sharp edges have been sanded off,” he said. “They are kids, and they should act as kids.”

Fiona Staples is amazing

I'm not familiar with Fiona Staples, but I've enjoyed Mark Waid's work. This could be kinda cool. I really like that Archie makes every effort to be contemporary and relatable! I'm cautiously optimistic about this news.

Even tough i think this is the ultimate gimmick to atract readers, i'm still going to buy it Waid and Staples in a book is hard to pass, I'm hoping the Dark Circle Comics has the succes it deserves.

Plus I have Atfterlife with Archie in my pull list and have yet to check on Sabrina's book.

with Afterlife, Sabrina, (the new direction of) Mega Man and now this, Archie's is really picking up momentum. im stoked. personally i get stoked whenever small publishers make new moves that may have big pay offs. its time for all of them to shine, Marvel/DC had their time.

I've never read an Archie comic book in my life, but this sounds really interesting. Waid and Staples should make for an awesome team. I think I'll check it out!

You've got me sold on the first 3 issues. I'm generally a fan of Waid, so if I like it, I may even stick around when Fiona leaves.

I like the new art style

Fiona Staples will make me pick up a regular Archie comic! I cannot quite believe it!

Nobody would be capable of replacing Fiona on Saga but I do believe the release schedule of Saga allows Fiona to draw another comic book as well and her style seems to be a perfect fit for Archie. Besides I'd be cool with reading Archie during Saga's off season and vice versa.

When will this be in stores? I'm kinda getting excited...

I'll definitely get the Fiona issues. That would be awesome if the sample is how the standard interior art is done, I like the way she transforms Betty into an actual human girl!
