James Wan to Direct Aquaman

Warner Brothers announced today that James Wan will be the director of the 2018 film Aquaman, which currently stars Jason Momoa. Reported by SuperHeroHype, Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, Warner Bros. Pictures made the announcement.

Silverman said that they were lucky to work with Wan on New Line's The Conjuring and the upcoming The Conjuring 2. Silverman went on to say a few more things about Wan's work.

"The ‘Aquaman’ film will be a major tentpole picture for us and James’s span of work has proven him able to take on any manner of project, bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice to the material.”

In addition to directing, Wan will be supervising the script, which was written by Kurt Johnstad, known for 300 & 300: Rise of an Empire. Before Aquaman appears in his own film, he will make his debut in Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice on March 25, 2016.

Wan is known for his horror films, such as Saw and the first two Insidious films. Most recently, Wan found success with Furious 7. Aquaman will hit theaters on July 27, 2018.

Don't like his previous work, so he better put everything he has into this film from being a total disaster.

He should have directed Flash.... cus you know... he did that movie about fast cars

edit: i love james wan's works. Insidious and Conjuring were really good. And Furious 7 was good too. That man knows how to direct a movie.

Little skeptical, but considering his body of work this could be ok. I liked fast 7 and Saw was the jam! Plus, the writer from 300 has script duties? We shall see.

I continue to be intrigued by the people WB has brought onto produce these features and hope that we will have a tonal variety and spectrum for these characters quickly. But noen of this is even committed to digital yet so I'm not to excited.

@staphin: I love his body of work. He can direct anything and it would be great. He isn't just a horror movie director. He directed Furious 7. Plus he understands characterization and what it means for movies success. If you need to see anything from him watch Saw 1, The Conjuring, and Furious 7. Saw 1 because you get a sense of a younger him, The Conjuring and Furious 7 for an wiser and older version.

He should just start selling chicken fried rice, his movies are awful.....wait a second for aquaman? And the DCCC? Wow he's a perfect fit mediocre director for a mediocre character for a second rate company

I'm disappointed with this, purely because of the last fast and the furious.

I watched Fast 5 and it was amazing, but that was Justin Lin. The sequel was a let down but had some good action. The last one though was so unbelievably terrible that I will never see another movie in that franchise, and can not be excited for Aquaman now in any way.

Combined with the fact they want to make him Polynesian instead of Greek for some dumb reason I'll probably just watch it after it's on some kind of streaming service.

Not at all. It's not the race of the actor. I should have been more clear.

It's the fact that the actor said they want to reinvent the character to have a polynesian backstory within the movie and universe they are setting up.

I'd much prefer if Atlantis and Themyscyra had a shared history at an early enough point in time, because I think that makes things interesting and opens up a lot of possibilities.

@bahri:its not really that far away if you think about it especially if they do with aquaman what they did with batman v superman and plan to do with wonder woman (start filming this fall acording to wonder woman herself) and that is film two years in advance so they could start filming aquaman as early as next year.

two hot guys working on the same project!!! dc is killing it in the diversity of their talent and im super happy. just hope the products are deserving of this talent

It's best that Aquaman and Wonder Woman have more varying backgrounds to better differentiate them and set them apart from each other. Otherwise it'll just be mythical greek sea king and mythical greek island princess.

Plus, Polynesians were an incredible sea-faring people, so to make them Atlantean gives a nod towards history, as well as a boost in on-screen diversity.

The Greeks were a seafaring people just as much. The Atlanteans are pretty distinct from Greeks and Amazons at this point in time, and I still think going back in time and having them diverge allows for more interesting story possibilities than simply making Aquaman Polynesian for the sake of diversity.

Atlantis is a Greek myth for a reason. I'm not saying it won't work, what they are doing...no one will know until the film is out, and I may end up preferring the movie take on it. I'm just skeptical that it is being changed for no other reason to increase diversity, which isn't a valid reason in my book. Atlantis is known as a Greek myth the world over and originates from a time when Polynesians didn't exactly have advanced cities, so it will be interesting how they reconcile that, if they even bother.

@muyjingo: The problem with the Furious movies arent direction, its scripting. Even people who dont like the ones he directed have to admit the action direction is pretty dang awesome. I wasnt in love with Furious 7, but that scene when they drive the car across those 3 skyscrapers was crazy awesome!

A guy who made decent horror movies after the turn of the century is a good director in my book. Hope he gives us a great Aquaman.
