Getting started with a PHP inventory app

Hello, 
 
I've been reading through the forum and documentation. I believe I understand the purpose of the API and how it should be used. What I don't see (or haven't found) is how to actually integrate the API into an existing application. Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction?
