ALL-STAR SECTION EIGHT brings back some familiar faces from DC's HITMAN series. Returning to write these characters is Garth Ennis, who spoke to us about the mini-series and coming back to write the characters of SECTION 8 again.
COMIC VINE: What is ALL-STAR SECTION 8 all about?
GARTH ENNIS: Incontinent alcoholic Sixpack imagines himself to be a superhero, and gathers a team of similar halfwits and losers to form Section Eight. Only able to find six, he wanders the DCU trying to get a real superhero to become the eighth member. But time is running out, as Gotham City prepares to tremble at the coming of "the threat".
CV: The team is coming back together. What's new with them this time around and is anyone missing?
GE: Original members Flemgem, the Defenestrator, Friendly Fire, Jean De Baton and Shakes are missing, having all died in the team's disastrous last appearance- though they will show up again later, as Sixpack gets a tour of DC's mystical realms in the company of a rather unusual guide. Huge pervert Bueno Excellente is the only other original member- emphasis on "member". Dogwelder is back, though this is actually a new Dogwelder. Demon lord and barman Baytor is drafted in to make up the numbers.
CV: You're working with some characters that haven't been seen in almost 20 years. How does it feel to be working with these characters again after almost two decades?
GE: Good fun. They're pretty much the only characters DC have that I'd want to write for any length of time. I think it's actually 15 years since their last appearance.
CV: The sneak peek was weird, fun, and a bit out there. Do you prefer writing something a bit more absurd?
GE: Absurd is probably my normal. Then again, in a universe where a rich guy dressing up as a bat and beating the crap out people is normal, is a guy welding dogs to people really that absurd? Okay, bad example, but you get the idea.
CV: The mini-series takes place in Gotham, so will we be seeing some familiar faces from the city?
GE: You bet, Batman himself shows up in issue one. After that you'll see Green Lantern, the Martian Manhunter, Wonder Woman and a couple of surprise guest stars in the last two issues.
CV: How has it been working with John McCrea on the book?
GE: Always excellent. When we work together we're essentially doing it to keep each other entertained.
CV: Why go the 6-issue route for the book?
GE: That's all there was to the story. But I have an idea for another mini, so we'll see if than pans out.
