Note: There will be spoilers here to discuss the events of the episode.

Recap

This episode picks up where we ended last week with the SHIELD mercs. Hunter seems to be showing some loyalty. He tells May to go after Creel and not worry about him since he's stuck in the wrecked vehicle. This results in Hunter getting captured by the Army. May gets Creel in her sights but Coulson orders her back. He wants to know who Creel is working for. With Hunter captured, Coulson now has to be concerned he'll talk and reveal their location.

Now that they have a quinjet, they need to reverse-engineer the cloaking tech to apply it to the Bus (their giant air transport). Fitz arrives and struggles to put together a coherent thought. Hunter is taken to Talbot, who wants him to give up Coulson. Talbot calls Coulson a vigilante. He says there's a senator with deep pockets that wants them. Hunter asks for two million plus proper burials for his two partners.

We get some more character development. Skye tries getting Coulson to let her help May get Creel. Coulson won't budge. Skye feels that with her recent training, she should be out in the field and mentions that Coulson shouldn't be trying to carry the entire load by himself. In the lab, Fitz is still seeing Simmons. He gets a hold of Creel's report and DNA and Simmons convinces him to try to solve the problem of dealing with him.

As for Creel, he's supposed to meet someone. Creel absorbed the obelisk and is having a hard time containing it. We saw the lethal affects last episode. Hunter arrives at their headquarters in a fancy car. He has 48 hours to turn over Coulson. Hunter says he just wants Creel and to help his partners' families. He's kind of open with Coulson but it's still unclear whether or not he can be trusted.

Fitz and 'Simmons' are working on stopping Creel. Mack, another agent, is in the lab when Fitz is talking to Simmons. With the others in the lab hesitant to talk to Fitz, Mack could prove useful in Fitz's recover. At the same time, Skye is packing up Izzy's belongings. Hunter tries warning her not to get attached to anyone and that S.H.I.E.L.D. Is just a job.

Creel is having trouble absorbing other things. Creel is infected. His Hydra contact calls to set up a second drop pick up. As Creel goes outside, Reina, the "girl in the flower dress" arrives and wants to offer Creel something. She wants the obelisk for herself and has a rare and powerful element for Creel. He takes it by force and threatens her, allowing her to live as payment for his new acquisition.

Reina then contacts Coulson and makes it clear she is not working for Hydra. She says she doesn't want what they want. She says that Garrett was enlightened when he took the serum that both Coulson and Skye used. Reina tricked Creel into taking an item with a tracker.

In the labe, Fitz keeps saying, "I didn't solve this today." They look through his old files. This brings up the idea that perhaps he may have already solved the problem in how to deal with a situation like Creel long ago.

Now able to track Creel, the agents go out to find him. As Creel is about to make an exchange with his Hydra contact, Hunter turns on the Agents. He goes after Creel but is outmatched. Coulson saves him using a device based on Fitz's idea. It appears to be the end of Creel as he freezes up like the other victims that have touched the obelisk.

Coulson still offers a place for Hunter despite he turned on them. Coulson says he needs agents in the field that will do what needs to be done. Since he didn't follow through with Talbot, his only other choice is to join up. When Skye talks to him later, she thinks Coulson is keeping something from her. She thinks it's more than just keeping important secrets from her. She's worried something might actually be wrong with him. May then tells him it's been too long since his last "episode." She knows he's due for another one and Coulson admits he's been fighting it. In a trance of sorts, he carves the alien symbols on the wall as May watches and documents it all.

Reina brings the obelisk to Skye's dad. He makes her touch it. It doesn't kill her but lights up instead. He wants his daughter and he'll tell show them what it's all about.

Coulson meets Talbot. Says he'll make a deal with him. He turns over Creel. They're keeping him in stasis since it's possible he could still revert to normal. Says they'll keep dropping off stuff while Talbot gets promotions. Making a nice show of what they have in terms of artillery, Coulson is able to get his message to Talbot and walk away.

Thoughts

There might not be as much action as the first episode of the season but the show is still moving in a positive direction. We're seeing the characters continue to evolve and are being fleshed out more. Adding more characters like Hunter and Mack will help the show have a bigger feel, despite the fact that Coulson is still rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D.

No Caption Provided

Mack has some technical know-how but clearly looks like he could hold his own in the field. He adds to the show by having some outside perspective. He's smart but not as smart as Fitz or Simmons. By bringing up the fact that Simmons left, that might be the key to opening up Fitz's eyes to his condition. He's more than just another labcoat agent walking around.

We don't see any sign of Daniel Whitehall in this episode and that's a good thing. With Kyle MacLachlan as Skye's father, there's no telling what his true motives are. Having more than one possible nemesis to deal with will give the show more to stand up against.

The show really feels like it's finding it's place. We're seeing the characters grow and are showing signs of being capable of doing more. With a tease in the previews for more on Simmons, we have something to look forward to as the battle against Hydra continues.

I'm pretty sure they showed us a picture of Skye's real mom. But for sure her father was revealed at the end, too ... in his human form. :) Who the heck are we dealing with ... alien symbols, alien DNA ... none of this has anything to do with Ultron, does it ... and Jemma, I swear to Odin, if she is full-on Hydra, I am going to be irretrievably emotionally distressed. Telling you, you guys that joke about Hail Hydra ...

@wheatstalker: You would not believe how upset my daughter was over the episode. She said, "Who's directing or writing this?" She was also upset that Simmons, (as did Skye), got her hair cut. Very upset when she went to bed.

Hunter is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters this season, he brings that "wildcard" feeling to the team and his sarcastic and rebellious attitude makes him a fun character.

My favorite thing about this season is the fact that S.H.I.E.L.D. is now underground, working from the shadows in secret. Way back in Iron Man 1 when the organization was first introduced, they appeared more like this secret Men In Black like group who deal with super-human threats without the world knowing about them. Even in Thor the group still had that feeling of mystery. But by the time The Avengers came out, and even more so in The Winter Soldier, S.H.I.E.L.D. appears to be a very well-known organization.

I simply like that Marvel is slowly returning the team back to the shadow, giving them that MIB feel, as they deal with these super-human threats from the shadows.

@war_killer: What's also great is we actually have MORE agents compared to when SHIELD was fully functional. I love that we're seeing different agents working with the core cast. It makes it feel bigger.

Well I wasn't sure if Lucy Lawless' character was dead at the end of the last episode but I guess that's that. Hmm.

Despite obviously wanting to find out more about Skye's parents and Coulson's condition, I'm personally finding Fitz's scenes the most engaging right now. Iain de Caestecker's just really nailing it. And I'm also finding myself wanting to see more of Ward. His motivations are still pretty ambiguous and I'm curious as to whether he will try to redeem himself at some point or remain a villain.

@g_man: Agreed. Though I actually didn't realize Coulson had already recruited all of those other members, like the ones you see walking around in the background. But I do like that that we have a much larger cast that the writers can play around with. I'm also glad that we get to see "Flowers" again, as I was beginning to wonder if Hydra was going to be the main threat again this season. But it appears that Coulson and his team may have their hands full this season.

Also, did anyone else notice the little nod towards Peggy Carter when Coulson was going through Fury's files? I guess that just further shows that Agent Carter will in someway tie back to AoS in the future.

I am surprisingly intrigued with how they are handling Fitz and his mental problems. This could still easily go full bad Beautiful Mind but for now it at least forces the directors (and editors) to structure the scenes in a way that is fairly novel for the series as a whole and visually interesting. not-Simmons acting as a concious for Fitz that is both trying to keep the mental status quo and perhaps attempt at heal Fitz is waaaay more interesting than all of the Coulson Lives! stuff from last season.

@wardishy: Ward is definitely in an interesting place ... not an agent, no longer with Hydra, no longer lying to everyone, including himself. It'll be interesting to see where they take him.

And you're right about Fitz, I totally expected he and Simmons to be the same characters from last season ... nope.

@4thor: well purée releases call him the Docotor maybe he's just a super nice surgeon who makes house calls and allows AoS to crossover with Greys Anatomy thus fusing The MCU and Shonda Rythme Universe together in a trans media empire that the world has never seen!

Another solid episode, not as action packed as the premier, but some good set-up and interesting character development. Really looking forward to next week.

Great episode. The preview for the next one looked intense as hell. Can't wait.

Also, every time I see Mack, I think to myself "Man, this guy looks just like Luke Cage."

Well, I said last week that we should get more Absorbing Man, and I got my wish :)

My guess, that thing Coulson keeps carving is some kind of Kree circuit-board

Geez, invisible Bus, invisible Quinjet, they're just begging Wonder Woman to sue them XD

The Klingon High Council already filed for infringement against SHIELD for stealing their cloaking technology. The Amazon will have to get in line. :)

Is it really the Kree ... I need to do some research. What about the Inhumans ... any chance there ...

Edit: Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, confirmed for Agent Carter!

I think that Skye is Spider Woman and her parents were New Men from the High Evolutionary.

In the first season, the men of the show had a weird desire for Skye, while the women detested her; with the exception of Simmons, but she said that she had no sense of smell. This sounds awfully like Jessica's pheromones from her first run in the '70s. Next, the High Evolutionary and Wundagore is right up Inhuman and Thor ally. So I believe that her parents must have been New Men since they were the "monsters". They could easily move the location of Wundagore from eastern europe to china.
