The Good

If there's one thing writer Haden Blackman knows how to do is to write a powerful scene. The second issue of STAR WARS: DARTH VADER AND THE GHOST PRISON showcased his ability to convey Vader as this incredibly powerful figure, and everything about the first few pages of this issue reinforced that fact. Vader is a man of few words, and not once does Blackman ever forget that. The scene where Valedictorian Laurita Tohm is bent down on one knee before Lord Vader, pledging his allegiance to him is executed brilliantly.

The story picks up exactly where we left off: it is the night of the graduation ceremony and the I think that Blackman may have been born to write Darth Vader and Star Wars comics since he does so with so much eloquence -- it's effortless. His writing sucks you into the story and really keeps you at the edge of your seat.

The issue is written from the perspective of the student, who is being led by Vader and being taught the ins and outs of the way the Empire works. It's an interesting way of doing things and its nice to see Vader trust, which isn't something we see very often. Haden Blackman has a great grip of these characters and the art by Agustin Alessio is absolutely breathtaking. Alessio captures the feel of the Star Wars universe brilliantly from his fantastic pencils to the way he uses colors.

The Bad

Nothing bad here. A fantastic read.

The Verdict

I think this is a comic that will be entertaining to both die hard Star Wars fans as well as those who follow the universe but aren't so deeply tied to it. It is a story that, only two issues in, gives Darth Vader's character a lot of depth; even in the moments where he doesn't appear on panel. It's a fantastic miniseries so far. Writer Haden Blackman really captures the essence of Vader and the Star Wars universe. If you love Darth Vader, this is a book you don't want to miss out on.
