Tōshirō Hitsugaya typically wears the standard captain attire without any additional accessories beyond the sash that hold his Zanpaktou. His most distinctive features are his spikey white hair and diminutive stature. Tōshirō is the only captain in the Gotei 13 that wears his sword on his back but rgis due to it's size being almost as tall as he is.

Tōshirō is shown to be quite self conscious about his size and generally has a short temper when he perceives an insult regarding the subject. Otherwise he maintains a calm and dignified air, and keeps his cool in all manner of situations. He has earned the respect of his squad and is often the most pro-active captain when it comes to volunteering for duty.

He has a soft spot for Hinamori, whom he has known since they were young in Rukongai and generally sees as a sister.

History

Early Years

Tōshirō is a child of Rukongai. Hailing from Junrin'an, the 1st district of Rukongai, he lived with an elderly woman whom he referred to as his grandmother. Tōshirō can be considered as a brat and at his most childish whenever he is visited by Momo Hinamori who visited him regularly. Although they constantly made fun of each other, they are close friends and Tōshirō has undertaken it upon himself to protect her no matter what.

Hinamori would enter into the Shinigami Academy, yet still will visit her good friend. Although Tōshirō probably wouldn't admit it, it was comforting that Hinamori was still visiting, as she, along with "Granny" were the only people he was really friends with. The other children who lived nearby and friends other friends of Hinamori would be too scared to get near him due to him being "cold as ice".

Hitsugaya was aware of how others saw him and understood their attitude as he was also aware that there was something about himself that was not "normal". Hitsugaya would have strange dreams of wandering through fields of ice. The dreams would begin to show more depth and would gradually be introduced to a mysterious dragon of ice. This disturbed Tōshiro as he wondered what it all meant. Unbeknownst to him he was gradually making Granny ill, as he slept he would exude a chilly aura.

After 5 years, Hinamori was still in the academy and Tōshirō noticed she was growing as a person and beginning to visit less due to her new commitments.

Tōshirō would meet a young and brash Rangiku Matsumoto whilst visiting a local shop. Knocked down by Matsumoto's large bosom, he was noticed for having an unusual spiritual aura or Riestsu. Before she could talk to him properly, Tōshirō shrugged her away and ran off. Intrigued by this unusual Rietsu, Matsumoto was able to easily track as it was uncontrolled and leaking. Explaining to Tōshirō that he was making his Granny ill, Matsumoto suggested he join the Shinigami Academy.

With Hinamori visiting less and seeing how she had grown as a person, Tōshirō finally decided to enter the Shinigami Academy.

Tōshirō's natural talent quickly saw him rise through the ranks of the Shinigami. Passing in his first year with top honors being directed to him ahead of any other classmates.

Although successful in the academy, it was met with some heartache. The Central 46 had learned that Hitsugaya and Kusaka, another student and good friend to Hitsugaya, had managed to attain the Zanpakutō, Hyōrinmaru. Due to this occurrence being taboo within Soul Society, The Central 46 ordered both to battle each other for the honour of wielding Hyōrinmaru. Hesitant at first until the power of having Hyōrinmaru for himself proved too irresistible. Hitsugaya was too strong for Kusaka and he managed to inflict a severe wound on him. Reluctant to deliver the finishing blow, the Military Corps steps in acting out the wishes of The Central 46 and executes Kusaka.

And so, Hitsuaya would enter the Gotei 13 being regarded as a prodigy and child genius. Having mastering Shikai very early on and being gifted with exceptional skill, it ensured a successful career. Soon Hitsugaya would become the youngest ever captain amongst the other Gotei 13 squads.

Soul Society Arc

It is within this arc we are introduced to Tōshirō for the first time. Captain of the 10th Division, his lieutenant is now Rangiku Matsumoto, he is greatly respected by his squad and his peers. Over the course of this arc Hitsugaya is used as a point of view for the Soul Society side as he investigates Gin's possible complicity in Aizen's murder. Through a letter left by Aizen for Momo to read, in which he accuses Tōshirō of being the mastermind of a plot against Soul Society, Momo is led to attack Tōshirō forcing him to hurt his childhood friend. Seeing Gin's hand in all this he attempts the kill the other captain but Gin is able to end the fight by targetting an unconcious Momo.

Afterwards, not knowing much of Aizen's letter was true concerning the plot surrounding Rukia's execution, Tōshirō breaks into the Central 46 where the orders for Rukia's execution, as well as her often moved up execution date came. He is shortly led away by Izuru Kira but leaves his apprehension to his lieutenant when he senses Hinamori had gone inside the Central 46 after they left.

When he arrived there he came upon Gin Ichimaru, a very much alive Sosuke Aizen and, laying behind them Hinamori's dying body. Aizen informs him of his betrayal after which Tōshirō attempts to kill him using his Bankai. Aizen is able to easily defeat him nevertheless but both and Hinamori escape death thanks to Captain Unohana's efforts.

Fake Karakura Town Arc

Tōshirō is one of the capatins present in the Fake Karakura town Arc. He eventually ends up facing the third Espada Tier Halibel. Despite the fact that he activated his bankai, Halibel activates her resurrection and decides to finish this battle. However, he acknowledges that underestimating him would be fatal and Halibel cuts the right side of his body before Toshiro could even react. Toshiro then looks shock from the immense power and speed of Halibel. After that she is attacked and she dodges and counters to see that it is Hitsugaya and he is unharmed. Halibel looks to where she thought she sliced down Hitsugaya but it was just a ice clone. He states it wont work again and he wanted to save it towards the end of the fight but herr large power boost in her speed and strength caught the Captain off guard. As the battle goes on Halibel starts using water attacks against Hitsugaya but so far they are useless against him, he says all water is his weapon and normal water will never work on him. He attacks her with a ice dragon. She counters by melting his ice. Halibel says that Hitsugaya ice can also be used as a weapon for herself. Which then she attacks Hitsugaya with a water attack that Halibel called "Cascada". After getting help from the Visords, Tōshirō asks if he can go fight Aizen alone. This eventually leads into a argument with Hyori where he decides he won't go after Aizen yet. After Aizen betrays Halibel and takes her out of the fight Tōshirō once again sets his sight on Aizen. He quickly engages Aizen telling Aizen he will not let Aizen use Kyōka Suigetsu. There fight leads into a final battle with Aizen where with the help of Shinji Hirako and Shunsui Kyoraku they appear to kill Aizen. However it's revealed that Aizen was using Kyōka Suigetsu the entire time. Tōshirō now stabbing Momo Hinamori goes into a rage and charges straight at Aizen. Aizen quickly defeats him and leaves him on the ground unable to move but alive.

Powers & Abilities

Tōshirō is an extremely talented and knowledgeable Shinigami. Referred to as a boy genius, Tōshirō is the one of few to successfully enter into the Shinigami Academy and graduate within a single year. This is made even more impressive due to achieving the highest overall scores in his class and his young age. Even prior to graduation, he had already learned his Zanpakutō's name and has accessed it's Shikai. He is the youngest Captain ever in the History of Soul Society. Tōshirō's potential is already vast, however he is still a child and has plenty of room to grow as he matures. The current Head-Captain of the Soul Society has said that Tōshirō is likely to surpass him in a 100 years.

His powers include:

• Master Swordsmanship: Hitsugaya is a proven swordsman whose skills are on a par with Gin Ichimaru and Ichigo Kurosaki.
• Immense Spiritual pressure: His spiritual pressure is said to be large and cold. Even before he became a Shinigami, his spiritual pressure was immense and uncontrollable, not unlike Ichigo, and caused people around him to freeze.
• Shunpo Expert: He has been shown to be a very proficient shunpo user. He is often seen using it during battles for offensive and defensive purposes.
• Kido Expert: Able to perform high-level kido without incantations.
• Enhanced Strength.

Ranking Stats: Ranking Stats: The Captains are ranked by their proficiency with the various types of stats. The Battle data is ranked clockwise. The top is Offensive, The Top Right represents defensive, the Bottom Right represents mobility, The Bottom represents Kido/Reiatsu, The Bottom Left represents Intelligence, and The Top Left represents physical strength. So overall, Hitsugaya has Offense of 80, Top Right: Defense of 80, Bottom Right: Mobility of 90, Bottom: Kidō/Reiatsu of 90, Bottom Left: Intelligence of 80, Top Left: Physical Strength of 80.

Zanpakuto

Hyōrinmaru

Toshiro's Zanpakutō is Hyōrinmaru ("Ice Ring"). While sealed, Hyōrinmaru resembles a normal Zanpakutō with the exception of it's guard, which is shape of a four-pointed star. The hilt and the sheath are light-blue, which matches Hyōrinmaru's ice abilities. Hyōrinmaru's shikai command is "set upon the frozen heavens."

Hyōrinmaru is the spirit of a great serpentine ice dragon, icy blue in appearance with large wings and bellowing voice. Hitsugaya has had an affinity with Hyōrinmaru even before he began training to become a Shinigami. He would often dream of roaming around on an icy vista where Hyōrinmaru would appear. Hyōrinmaru is known as the strongest of all water and ice element Zanpakutō in Soul Society.

Shikai

Hyō rinmaru is released when Hitsugaya utters the phrase " Soten ni Zase " ("Sit Upon the Frozen Heavens"). During its Shikai, Hyōrinmaru slightly extends and gains a crescent blade attached to the hilt with a chain. Hyōrinmaru allows Hitsugaya to control water and ice. Tōshiro's slashes create an immense amount of spirit energy which spills out from the tip of the blade, creating a great flow of ice shaped like Hyō rinmaru itself. The dragon flies attacks opponents and instantly freezes anything it touches. The chain-blade also freezes anything Hitsugaya traps using it.

In addition, Hitsugaya has the limited ability of controlling the weather around his nearby area. This is known as " Weather Subjugation"

Tenso Jurin

" ("Heaven's Phase Servitude"). This is due to the amount of power his Shikai exudes and his initial control of ice and water. Still a fledgling ability, Hitsugaya is able to use this in Bankai form, however reluctantly as it is possible that it may result in killing all who get too close to it's vicinity.

Bankai

Hyorinmaru's bankai, is named Daiguren Hyorinmaru.

Daiguren Hyorinmaru

(Literally translated as "Great Crimson Ice Ring"), and causes ice to flow from Hyorinmaru onto Toshiro, forming two large wings and a tail. A dragon's head made of ice also forms around his sword hand, encasing it up to the hilt. His left is covered fully until the wrist where it then spans into claws, leaving his hand and fingers free. Three flowers of ice, shaped similarly to his zanpakuto, are also created behind Toshiro with four petals each, which melt away as Toshiro attacks.

Hyorinmaru's bankai has two known special techniques. The first is "dragon hail flower", which freezes any opponent Hitsugaya stabs, locking them into an ice cocoon and freezing them to their core. Once frozen, Hitsugaya can shatter his opponent. The second is "thousand years ice prison", which forms a multitude of ice pillars by using the moisture in the atmosphere. These ice pillars then envelop the opponent.

Completed Daiguren Hyōrinmaru (Adult Bankai)

Hitsugaya is tall and lanky. This Bankai forces his body to age. Ice covers his shoulders, forearms and knees. He has the ability to flash-freeze extremely large objects at a distance with a simple hand gesture and that anything frozen by Hitsugaya will have all of its functions and abilities negated. Anything that touches Hitsugaya will be flash-frozen as well. He can also freeze anything around him after four seconds of building up his power. The bankai does take it's toll on Toshiro and he can't maintain it for very long.
