Larry Clemons , one of the main script-writers of the film, reported on Walt Disney explicitly forbidding him from reading the original novel. The original tales were violent and most of the protagonists were depicted as remorseless killers. Notably Mowgli skinning the corpse of Shere Khan and leading the jungle animals in attacking and demolishing a human village. Instead the film features a kid-friendly jungle and Mowgli never ages to adulthood.
The film was a critical and financial hit, considered a fitting swan song to Walt Disney who died during its production. Thye songs of the film are considered among the most notable in the Disney canon. On the other hand, several critics pointed that the film was "devoid of mood or atmosphere"
