Before Valkyrie can embrace her future, she must put Barbara Norriss to rest. But at the cost of her powers? An Asgardian adventure in the Reign Eternal!
Valkyrie leaves Earth and travels to Asgard because of an unexpected summons from Hela. She has not been to Asgard in a long time, and the inhabitants react fearfully, as the appearance of the Valkyries signifies that they are coming for those who are about to die.
Since she is surprised by Hela's summons, she visits the Norns first. They show her a vision of a great battle, of death visiting many mortals, including the Defenders. She sees herself thrown by Hela into eternal damnation in Niffleheim. The Norns tell her that this will all happen, and nothing can change it. She goes off to accept her fate.
Back on Earth, Hellcat worries about her; she has been having nightmares. Kyle is having his own trouble: unknown to him, the Justice Department has learned of possible financial malfeasance on his part, and are planning to prosecute him.
Val meets Harokin, the leader of the heroes of Valhalla, and then they find Hela. Hela has no plans to banish her, however. She wants Val to lead the Einherjar against an upstart named Ollerus the Unmerciful, who wishes to take her place as god of death.
Val accepts, and leads the army through Valhalla, which she is surprised to see is no longer the majestic landscape it once was. It used to be run by Odin, and now that Hela is in charge, it is neglected.
Ollerus and his minions, Poppo and Casiolena, magically watch the army and plan an ambush. There is a great battle, and Val's army is doing well. Suddenly a great earthquake strikes, and ravages her army.
She sees a giant mountain, moving through the land as if it was a shark's fin. She enters, and sees her original body--not the body of mortal Barbara Norriss that she now inhabits. When she touches it, she falls unconscious.
Her original body rises, inhabited by Barbara Norriss's now-conscious spirit. She now works for Ollerus.
