Gargoyle's home has been overrun by a mysterious demonic entity! Who or what is Null the Living Darkness, and how will it change Isaac Christians' life forever?

Gargoyle, filled with guilt, leaves the Defenders headquarters. However, Clea and Devil-Slayer track him down and bring him back, explaining how he is now their friend.

Hellcat and Valkyrie visit Patsy's mother's burned-down home, where they find her little-used Shadow Cloak, and a boy who had fallen inside by accident, and runs away when they find him. Patsy decides the Cloak is too dangerous, and folds itself up into itself so that it disappears.

Kyle Richmond meets with the judge presiding over his case with the IRS, which has been going on for many, many, many issues. It turns out that he had just been sloppy with his money, and as long as he pays his back taxes, he's fine. It is a huge relief, but then he runs into August Masters from the clandestine CIB agency that he had a problem with last issue. Masters says he fixed Kyle's legal issues for him, presumably to get leverage over Kyle in the future.

Gargoyle tells the rest of the Defenders that he still feels unresolved issues over how he left his home town of Christiansboro (which he made a deal with demons to save). They all travel there to see what can be done. When they arrive, they find that it is almost deserted, and filled with a strange fog.

They split up. Hellcat meets a mentally-challenged man who says everyone left after ghosts arrived. Gargoyle goes back to his house and sees the ghost of his brother, who died as a child. Then he sees his mother's ghost and tries to hang himself, but his gargoyle body won't die. His dead father berates him for not being able to do anything right. Valkyrie and Clea are attacked by a weird cat and demon hands. Devil-Slayer meets a young girl, who hypnotizes him with demonic eyes.

Val, Hellcat, Devil-Slayer, and Clea wake up and are confronted by the man, girl, and cat, who are all controlled by Null, the Living Darkness. He relates his origin: a good race of beings called the S'Raphh lived on the moon. They sought meaning elsewhere in the cosmos, but finding none, they all killed themselves. Null arose from their spirits, to cause fear and destroy life.

The Defenders battle him to no avail until Gargoyle shows up and is able to use his bio-mystical bolts to fill Null with life-force, defeating him.

Gargoyle's ghost-family reappears and tells him they are proud of him, then goes away. Gargoyle feels like he has made peace with the past.
