Dr. Daystrom, creator of the computer technology that drives all Federation ships has perfected his latest 'multitronic' computer, the M5, which will replace the older duotronic devices in current Starfleet ships.

On orders from Starfleet, the USS Enterprise is outfitted with the M5 and only a skeleton crew, and ordered to participate in wargames against a small attack force to test the M5's capabilities.

The M5, however, is an artificial intelligence, and it immediately acts in the interest of self-preservation by locking all controls and using deadly force against all perceived hostilities.
