Saudi Arabia is an Islamic absolute monarchy, named after its ruling dynasty: the House of Saud. A local dynasty with several rivals and under threat by the Ottoman Empire for centuries, the Saud spend the period 1902-1932 in expansion campaigns. By 1932 most of the Arabian peninsula had been unified under their rule. Saudi Arabia controls the cities of Mecca and Medinah, the birthplaces of Islam. Its capital and largest city is Riyadh. It is the world's leading petroleum exporter.
Saudi Arabia borders Jordan, Iraq, Yemen, Oman, the United Arab emirates, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait.
