    Proteus, the Old Man of the Sea, is an Olympian deity of the sea. He is particularly noted for his shape-shifting skills to the point of having no stable form. In comic books he has been depicted as the court sorcerer of Poseidon.

    In Aquaman #17, Proteus creates a time-traveling method for his master. 
     
    In ancient myth Proteus is credited with knowing " all that has been, is now, and lies in store ". However getting him to give answers was a task in itself. His habitat are the coasts of Egypt. He is considered a son of Poseidon. The identity of his mother is not given in surviving accounts. His sons Polygonus and Telegonus were enemies of Heracles (Hercules) and were killed by said cousin. His daughter Eidothea  betrayed her father to Menelaus, King of Sparta. His other daughter Cabiro was a mistress of Hephaestus and mother to the Cabiroi/Corybantes.
