Before Nick Fury even knows his assailant is there, shots ring out and Fury collapses! The figure removes its mask ...... only to reveal Nick Fury!

Starts off with Nick Fury infiltrating some base, when he is suddenly shot from behind and killed.

However, it is discovered that it was in fact an LMD (Life Model Decoy) of Nick Fury and the killer was the real Nick Fury, who along with Dum Dum Dugan were testing out LMD's as field agents in a simulator room. It is also established that Nick Fury shot the LMD 3 times, but the LMD s reported as being shot 4 times. Nick concludes that someone else believed the LMD was Nick and shot him. The only clue is a card with a scorpion emblem printed on it.

There are also side stories taking place in Las Vegas about a comedian named Flip Mason who has a gambling addiction and owes money to a gangster named Minton Hackett who in turn is apparently going big time in the criminal world. There is also a car race scene showing a driver with a familiar scorpion emblem on his wrist.

We then go back to Nick who is in the Nevada desert testing a suit able to withstand multiple blaster attacks and is about to be tested against a missile. However, we see that among the testers is someone sporting a wrist tattoo of scorpion emblem.

We go back to Nick who discovers his suit has been shut off and will be unprotected when the missile arrives. Unable to contact Unit One, Nick contacts Unit Two to get a nearby rocket sled for testing astronauts activated by remote control. Nick just makes it to the sled in time as it rockets off.

Back at Unit One, Scorpio has rendered everyone at Unit One asleep, when Nick crashes thru a wall riding a SHIELD motorcycle (how he got the motorcycle is never shown) and Nick and Scorpio battle it out.

Meanwhile, in the side story of Mason and Hackett. Due to a case of mistaken identity. Mason recieves a briefcase of money intended for Hackett. When Hackett asks for the case from the contact, a gunfight ensues and spills out onto the streets. We also learn that the briefcase had a bomb rigged to it.

Meanwhile Nick has defeated Scorpio and is about to unmask him when somehow the fight has also spilled onto the streets (this is never shown, it just happens) and a stray bullet from the gunfight with Hackett happens to hit Nick, allowing Scorpio to escape onto his flying ship (that was hovering in the sky and nobody noticed).

Then (for no explainable reason) Hackett with his dying breath shoots at the flying ship and amazingly hits a vital spot on the aircraft causing it to explode. Seemingly killing Scorpio. Leaving Nick to wonder that he'll never know who Scorpio was.

The story ends with Mason phoning home to tell his wife about his good luck with the money when the bomb in the briefcase goes off killing him.
