He is caught by Iruka, his teacher and fails his ninja test for the third time in a row. Mizuki, another teacher tells him that if he steals and learns a technique from a sacred scroll, he will become a genin. He does this and heads to the forest to master shadow clone jutsu. Iruka finds him and Mizuki follows. They fight and eventually Naruto uses his new technique to defeat Mizuki. Iruka premotes him by giving him his headband.

Later, Naruto meets the Hokage's grandson Konohamaru. He teaches him harem jutsu but Ebisu, Konohamaru's tutor finds them in the forest. Naruto defeats Ebisu and he and Konohamaru become rivals.

The next day, Naruto is teamed up with Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno. Kakashi introduces himself to them and takes them to a training field to test them. Sandaime tells Iruka how tough a teacher Kakashi is. Kakashi tells them to each try and steal a bell from him before noon. All three fail. He tells them they should stop trying to become ninjas...
