The evil Johnny Thunder, of Earth-1, has commandeered the Thunderbolt, and used it's powers to erase the Justice League of America from history. Confronted by the Justice Society of America, Johnny Thunder commands the Thunderbolt to grant the powers of the Justice League of America to his criminal co-horts. The Justice Society of America confront the Lawless League. Vulnerable to magic, the evil Superman falls to Doctor Fate. Vulnerable to the color yellow, the evil Green Lantern falls to the Golden Age Green Lantern. Vulnerable to fire, the evil J'onn J'onzz, Manhunter From Mars, falls to the Golden Age Hawkman. Lacking his greater experience, the evil Flash falls to the Golden Age Flash.

The Golden Age Atom manages to divest the evil Atom of his size and weight controls, neutralizing him as a threat. Mister Terrific beats the living daylights out of the evil Batman. Upon their defeat, the Lawless League are interrogated by Doctor Fate. In this way, the Justice Society of America learn how the Thunderbolt was able to erase the Justice League of America from history. Before the Justice Society of America can undo the Thunderbolt's changes to history, they are assailed by a Thunderbolt-generated hurricane. Doctor Fate and the Golden Age Green Lantern combine their powers to shield the team from the powerful winds. To counter their tactics, Johnny Thunder orders the Thunderbolt to unleash an earthquake on their position.

Doctor Fate, the Golden Age Atom, and the Golden Age Green Lantern are immediately knocked out by the combined forces of the hurricane and earthquake. The Golden Age Hawkman rescues the Golden Age Green Lantern and Doctor Fate from a fatal fall. The Golden Age Flash rescues the Golden Age Atom and Mister Terrific from the same peril. To escape the Justice Society of America, Johnny Thunder orders the Thunderbolt to take him to to the moon. Unable to speak his commands on the airless satellite, Johnny Thunder carves his orders into the surface. The Thunderbolt pulls atmosphere from the Earth, to surround the moon. Doctor Fate and the Golden Age Green Lantern travel back in time to undo the Thunderbolt's changes to history.

Their powers, however, are not able to overcome the Thunderbolt's enchantments. The Justice Society of America track Johnny Thunder to the moon. Johnny Thunder orders the Thunderbolt to create a trio of super-villains, to battle the Justice Society of America. The Golden Age Atom and Mister Terrific are transformed into wood by Medusa-Man. Doctor Fate conjures a mask over Medusa-Man's face, neutralizing his powers. The Golden Age Flash and The Golden Age Hawkman fall to Repello-Man, who turns their attacks back against them. The Golden Age Green Lantern falls to Absorbo-Man, who drains away the energies of the power ring, before unleashing them back on the Emerald Crusader.

Absorbing all the power ring energy has also given Absorbo-Man the Golden Age Green Lantern's vulnerability to wood. Doctor Fate fells Absorbo-Man with the wooden forms of Mister Terrific and the Golden Age Atom. Doctor Fate uses reverse magic to destroy Repello-Man. Doctor Fate enters into an epic confrontation with the Thunderbolt. During the ensuing conflict, Johnny Thunder is nearly killed outright by fallout from their mystic duel. Ultimately, Johnny Thunder surrenders, ordering the Thunderbolt to set everything back to the way it was. The Johnny Thunder, of Earth-2, reports to his first new meeting with the Justice Society of America. At the Secret Sanctuary, the Justice League of America learn of the criminal exploits of a small time crook, named Johnny Thunder. Only the Thunderbolt itself retains any knowledge of the altered timeline.
