    A League Divided

Once upon a time, seven Appellaxan meteors fell to Earth, carrying seven Appellexan warriors. Each Appellaxan warrior immediately began recruiting soldiers, to fight a war with the other Appellaxan warriors. The victor of this war would be named ruler of Appellax. The Appellaxan conflict drew Aquaman, the Batman, the Flash, the Green Lantern, J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter from Mars, Superman and Wonder Woman together. After defeating the Appellaxans, the seven heroes remained together, as the Justice League of America.

Firestrom, the Nuclear Man pulls monitor duty, aboard the satellite headquarters of the Justice League of America. J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter from Mars, storms the satellite. The Martian Manhunter has come for the Appellax meteor, on display in the Justice League of America's trophy room. To elude Firestorm, the Nuclear Man, J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter from Mars, turns invisible. Professor Martin Stein points out that the Martian Manhunter seems shy around fire. Firestorm, the Nuclear Man, increases the ambient temperature of the satellite, to flush out J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter from Mars.

The Martian Manhunter violently subdues Firestorm, the Nuclear Man. Upon recovery, Firestorm, the Nuclear Man summons the Justice League of America. The Green Arrow, formerly a member of the Justice League of America, reveals the history of the Justice League of America's conflict with the Appellaxans. The failure of the original seven members to respond to the emergency signal is telling. Snapper Carr beams up to the satellite. The Justice League of America split up, to stop their teammates from recovering the other six Appellax meteors.

The Phantom Stranger teases the tale about to unfold. Aquaman searches a volcanic island, in the Indian Ocean, for his Appellax meteor. Having located it, Aquaman moves to retrieve it, only to be stopped by the Red Tornado. Aquaman savagely attacks the Red Tornado. Only memories of his loved ones, Kathy Sutton and Traya, save the Red Tornado from drowning. Aquaman recovers the Appellax meteor. The Red Tornado closes in on Aquaman. The Phantom Stranger strikes the Red Tornado down. To fulfill destiny, the Phantom Stranger, reluctantly, sides with the Appellax agenda.

The Phantom Stranger transports the Red Tornado to the satellite. Firestorm, the Nuclear Man tends to the Red Tornado's injuries. Zatanna journeys to Paradise Island. Zatanna meets with Queen Hippolyta. Wonder Woman attempt to retrieve her Appellax meteor, only to have Zatanna bury it, with a mystic incantation. Wonder Woman savagely attacks Zatanna. Zatanna deflects Wonder Woman's attack, giving the Amazon Princess time to recover the meteor. Zatanna conjures a powerful surge of water, to fell Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman reflects Zatanna's attack back on her, nearly drowning Zatanna.

Wonder Woman escapes with the Appellax meteor. The Amazons tend to Zatanna's injuries. The Atom travels, via phone line, to Zimbabwe, to garner air transport. The Green Lantern disables the Atom's jet fighter. The Green Lantern unearths his Appellax meteor. The Atom sucker punches the Green Lantern. The Atom attempts to get through whatever force is controlling the Green Lantern's action. Given time to recover, the Green Lantern uses his power ring to imprison the Atom. The Green Lantern escapes with his Appellax meteor. The Atom escapes from his prison, and returns to the satellite.

The team's mounting failures deeply trouble them. In a field in Italy, the Elongated Man ambushes the Flash. Fearing that the Flash has been, accidentally, severely injured, the Elongated Man tends to his fallen friend. The Flash, using super-speed vibrations, triggers an earthquake. The Elongated Man is swallowed up by a fissure. The Elongated Man stretches to freedom, and renews his attack on the Flash, The Flash beats the Elongated Man into unconsciousness. The Flash retrieves his Appellax meteor, then joins his teammates in the Secret Sanctuary.

The team doesn't understand why their headquarters is in ruins. Aquaman points out that Wonder Woman's costume is different. J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter from Mars, speaks of waking up on a strange world. The Black Canary, and the Green Arrow, track the Batman. The Batman ambushes the Black Canary, and the Green Arrow. The Batman's attack causes the Green Arrow's shaft to go astray, taking out the Black Canary. The Batman handcuffs the Green Arrow, then proceeds to recover his Appellax meteor. Upon recovery, the Black Canary uses an acetylene arrow to free the Green Arrow.

The Green Arrow chastises himself for getting involved in another Justice League of America case. The Black Canary uses her sonic scream to subdue the Batman, only to discover that the Batman is merely a dummy. The Batman has escaped with his Appellax meteor. Aboard the satellite, the Green Arrow furiously vents his failure. In the Secret Sanctuary, the Batman reports on his battle with the Green Arrow. The Batman comments on all the changes to the Green Arrow's appearance. The Appellax meteors begin to glow. The Hawkman gathers an arsenal of weapons to use against Superman.

The Hawkman flies to Greenland, to engage Superman. The Hawkman destroys a Superman robot. The Hawkman destroys a second Superman robot. The Hawkman's weapon shatters against the real Superman. Superman punches the Hawkman into orbit. Protected by a lead lined suit, Superman recovers his Appellax meteor, safe from it's lethal kryptonite radiation. Unconscious, the Hawkman drifts into a zeta beam, transporting him to the planet, Rann. Adam, and Alanna, Strange are alerted to the Hawkman's presence on Rann.

Having just ended the Rann/Thanagar War, Adam Strange is anxious to remove the Hawkman from Rann. Adam Strange informs the Justice League of America that the Hawkman is being sent back to their space. The Elongated Man, stretching himself to the limit, successfully retrieves the Hawkman, and brings him back aboard the satellite. The Appellax meteors "hatch" releasing the Appellax warlords within. The Justice League of America regain their memories. The Justice League of America attack the Appellaxans, but are quickly subdued.

The Batman awakens to find the Green Arrow standing over him. After establishing that their teammates are no longer under the influence of the Appellaxans, the Justice League of America assemble, in force, to take down the Appellaxan threat. The Wood King, the Crystal Creature, and the Mercury Monster battle against one another, in Vermont. The Batman, the Black Canary, the Green Arrow, the Hawkman, Superman, Wonder Woman and Zatanna join the conflict. Superman shatters the Wood God into splinters, only to discover that it's blood is laced with kryptonite radiation.

Wonder Woman pulls Superman from the battlefield. Zatanna destroys the Mercury Monster. Distracted by the Black Canary, the Crystal Creature is open to attack from the Batman. One well placed batarang shatters the Crystal Creature. Aquaman, the Elongated Man, the Flash, and the Red Tornado engage the Fire Giant, and the Glass Creature, off the coast of Ireland. The Glass Creature blinds the Flash. Aquaman drags the Glass Creature deep into the sea, until the pressure of the crushing depths shatter it. The Elongated Man draws the Fire Giant's attention.

The Red Tornado uses the power of his vortices to extinguish the Fire Giant. The Atom, Firestorm, the Nuclear Man, the Green Lantern, and J'onn J'onzz, the Martian Manhunter engage the Golden Roc, and the Stone Giant, in New York City. Firestorm, the Nuclear Man, uses his atomic restructuring power to keep the collateral damage to a minimum. The Green Lantern shatters the Stone God. The Green Lantern fires the Atom at the Golden Roc. The impact gives the Martian Manhunter the opening needed to destroy the Golden Roc.

The Green Lantern transports the remains of the Appellaxan battle forms to the sun, where the Red Tornado deposits them. The Justice League of America say their farewells to J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter from Mars, who returns to New Mars. The Green Arrow prepares to depart, but has second thoughts. The Green Arrow rejoins the Justice League of America, and is warmly welcomed back with open arms.
